Another oil painting, based on a photo taken during my evening journey along the Thames by river taxi in the summer of '24. Looking at the silhouettes of HMS Belfast and the towers of Cannon Street station against that magnificent sunset, how could I not be inspired to paint it!

With not a cloud in the sky, it was a pleasant drive this morning, across the Nottinghamshire border, into Lincolnshire. I had been invited by the Carlton-le-Moorland & District Art Group, who gave me a warm welcome before my demonstration on how to paint boats in oils. For my reference, I used a photo taken in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, in 1988. Ha, you never know when your old holiday snaps might come in useful!

When Nottingham's old Victoria railway station was demolished in 1967, the clocktower thankfully survived and became a focal point of the Victoria shopping centre that was built in its place. I saw this view on Boxing Day and liked the way the shadow cast along Milton Street and the hotel framed the sunbathed clocktower.

It's not every day you get to meet Robin Hood! This is one of the most rewarding aspects of working in the creative arts industry in that I meet a range of personalities and opportunities to paint in places normally off limits to the public, such as the balcony of the Council House.

Wow, what a view! A huge thank you to @supersoapboxchallenge and @itsinnottingham for helping me to find the best spot for my plein-air painting session today - the balcony of the Council House, which overlooks Nottingham's Old Market Square. It was a great turnout that helped the nominated charity @lnaact 🚁 achieve a boost with their fundraising. I need to finish off the paintings in the studio, so I will post more images when I do 🎨 🏎🏁

Following my early morning plein-air session last weekend, I have finished the two oil paintings I started at the Wilford suspension bridge, here in the studio, as both found a buyer at the event.
Here they are with other pictures featuring the River Trent at Stoke Bardolph and Newark Castle to make a series about the @race2thecastle paddleboarding event.
The castle pic has also sold, while the Stoke Bardolph pics are available for sale. DM for details.

Wow, I never realised this section of the River Trent was so busy on a Saturday morning, with paddleboarders, rowers, runners, cyclists, dog walkers..!
It was an early morning start for me, catching the 06.30 bus to Trent Bridge. After a brisk walk along the Embankment towards the suspension bridge, I arrived in time to see the start of @race2thecastle at 07.00. Over the next couple of hours, I painted two oil sketches before the last wave of contestants started paddling along the Trent at 09.00 towards their destination at Newark Castle. Then, a brief silence before the Parkrun started, and that's when I decided to call it a day as the shadows were moving fast as the sun rose. I'll finish these off in the studio, adding more detail to the activity on the river.

A watercolour and gouache day today when painting the crew cleaning the helicopter at @lnaact HQ near Lincoln. I'm glad I did as much as i could in 30 minutes, as the klaxon sounded a couple of minutes after going back inside for a break, and it took off. Only to return after being stood down. Didn't last long, as it soon took off again and was away for most of the afternoon. So, I sketched the vehicles inside the hangar instead, away from the blazing sunlight 🌞🚁🎨

Never too old for the merry-go-round! Nothing beats a lunchtime outing to the fair, where I painted a quick watercolour and gouache sketch of the @traditionalvintagefunfairs carousel at Wollaton Park, Nottingham. After a ride on the carousel, the boats and the ferris wheel, it was back to the studio. 🎠🎡🎨😊

Here is another painting I started last summer, one of my local Victorian signal box here in Bingham, Notts. The creative journey has seen this painted over several sessions, plein-air and in the studio. While it was decommissioned 10 years ago, the derelict signal box is thankfully still standing, a local landmark to gaze upon while you wait for a train to pass. On that note, I think I will print this too on a greetings card. On sale in the local newsagents soon.
