Back at Sacramento State with the College of Business.
This round was staff and student portraits. With repeat clients the goal is always the same… keep things consistent without repeating the same image.
We shot around 4PM, so the light needed some control. I used a scrim to knock down the sun, then built the portrait with a simple two-light setup. Godox lights with Phottix modifiers, locked in on Benro tripods. Shot on my Nikon system, which has been rock solid for this kind of work.
Tethered into Capture One so the team could review images as we worked and make adjustments in real time.
Every shoot comes down to reading the space, adjusting to the light, and finding a way to make something new.
If that isn’t a nice surprise! @timengle@englephoto_inc in collaboration with @benrousa have sponsored a brand new 5ft+ #carbonfiber MAMMOTH tripod for the @sacstatephoto program and we’re here for it! Look at that anodizing 🔵🟢✨✨✨ Definitely the nicest horse in our stable now. Thank you Tim for making it possible! Thank you BENRO! What a nice gift 💪
Portrait session with my longtime friend Sam Altawil in downtown Sacramento.
Sam had just picked up a new tuxedo, so we met early in the morning to make a series of environmental portraits around the city. Downtown Sacramento is a great place for portrait photography because the light bounces off the buildings and windows, creating interesting reflections and patterns to work with.
For this shoot I kept the lighting simple and used a single strobe with natural reflected light from the buildings to shape the portrait.
Sam and I go back more than thirty years. He always brings great presence and style in front of the camera, which makes portrait work like this especially fun.

Recently met up with my friend @samaltawil_1 in downtown Sacramento to make some portraits.
Sam had just picked up a new tuxedo and the early morning light downtown was doing what it always does . . . bouncing off buildings and creating all kinds of interesting patterns to work with.
We kept the lighting simple and moved quickly through a few locations using a single strobe and letting the architecture and natural light do a lot of the work.
Shoots like this are always a great reminder to get out and experiment. Trying different gear, different light, and different ideas without the pressure of a commercial assignment always pays off later.

This behind-the-scenes video is from a model test shoot with Anais Nicole, created to update her portfolio for Cast Images Model Agency.
We kept the looks clean and simple, which also created space to experiment with lighting and refine techniques in a low-pressure test environment. Shoots like this are valuable because they allow both the model and photographer to focus on movement, expression, and technical growth without the constraints of a client production.
Anais moves very naturally in front of the camera, constantly posing and adjusting, which makes it easy to keep momentum and capture a strong range of looks efficiently.

Always good to exercise creatively and technically . looking forward to doing more work together.
Posting pics (particularly of myself) since becoming a mom has been so hard/weird for me. And it’s so apparent, my feed pre motherhood vs now 😂 Maybe that’s a side effect of losing your self in motherhood, but man, I’ll never be more proud of myself for doing anything else. So how can I be so lost when I only feel like I’m discovering who I was always meant to be! motherhood is joyous and longing (amongst so many other things, like insanity 😍)

You don’t always get a perfect studio or a perfect location.
Sometimes you get a driveway.
Amanda @seaweanie was in town and needed updated digitals for her agency.
One strobe. Gray paper background. Simple setup.
You work with what you have and make it count.
ehind the scenes of a corporate headshot day.
Two looks per person . an environmental headshot in the conference room and a blue screen setup so backgrounds can be updated later if needed. Three lights, tethered capture to an iPad, and real-time review so everyone knows they’re walking away with something they’re happy with.
I’ve worked with this team multiple times and it’s always smooth, efficient, and collaborative . exactly how a headshot day should run.
Thinking back to my first studio shoot of 2025 . . . and it still holds up.
This session was with Gretchen, and she was a standout from the first frame. Strong presence, natural movement, and a real understanding of how to work the camera. That combination makes a huge difference in studio portrait work and lets the images feel effortless rather than forced.
These were created in my studio using a simple, controlled lighting setup focused on clean tones, natural expression, and letting the subject lead. No heavy concepts, no over-styling . . . just solid portrait photography with an editorial edge.
Shoots like this are a good reminder of why studio work is so valuable. Whether it’s fashion, editorial portraits, branding imagery, or portfolio development, the goal is always the same — create images that feel confident, intentional, and timeless.
If you’re a model, creative, or professional looking to update your portfolio or create strong studio portraits, this is exactly the kind of work I love doing.

A little late sharing this one… but it was too fun not to post.
This was a holiday card photo shoot for a local business, and yes — pajamas were part of the plan. I scouted the on-location shoot ahead of time, waited for the right natural light, and kept the lighting simple so the group could relax and actually enjoy the process.
This is one of those commercial photography projects where planning, light, and personality all come together. When a business is willing to have fun with their branding photography, the final images feel natural and memorable.
This was one of those sessions that didn’t feel like a photoshoot.
No strobes, no setup stress — just sunlight bounced off a mirror into a shiny board and a long conversation that happened to include a camera.
Shot on the Nikon Z9 with an 85 mm. Sometimes, keeping it simple brings out something real.
