Emily Dickinson lived a solitary, reclusive life in a tiny room in Amherst, Massachusetts, writing poems that both scaled the heights into the cosmos and penetrated the infinite crevices of the human heart. Out of her nearly 2000 poems, our chosen title track is a poem that contains only 9 words and four dashes:
No prisoner be—
Where Liberty—
Himself—abide with Thee—
From our first workshop nearly 2 years ago, these inspiring words paired with Kevin Puts’ rousing music, rang immediately true to each of us. We knew, then and there, it was a message we wanted - we needed - to put into the world with joyful abandon, for every person, from every walk of life, to remember where true Liberty lies.
May this album - and this call to Liberty - ring out into the world - to every neighborhood, every community, every corner and every mountaintop. We can’t wait to sing it with you along the way!

As National Poetry Month comes to a close, we’re celebrating the enduring power of Emily Dickinson’s words through "Emily – No Prisoner Be," a song cycle by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts inspired by her poems. Opening the work, “They shut me up in Prose” was performed by Joyce DiDonato and Time for Three live in The Greene Space.

As when a little Girl
They put me in the Closet –
Because they liked me “still” –
Still! Could themself have peeped –
And seen my Brain – go round –
They might as wise have lodged a Bird
For Treason – in the Pound –

This week’s encore brought a whole lot of “Joy” to the stage of Marian Anderson Hall! Student musicians from KIPP West Philadelphia Preparatory Charter School and our All City Orchestra Fellowship brought the house down as they joined Time for Three, Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop, and the Orchestra for a special encore performance of Time for Three’s original song “Joy” following this week’s concerts. Moments like this are what music education is all about—congratulations to these talented young musicians, and thanks for joining us!
Time for Three joins The Philadelphia Orchestra to perform Kevin Puts’s Contact, a work they recorded together for Deutsche Grammophon and won a GRAMMY for in 2023. The piece imagines an encounter across galaxies; Puts described it as “a call to intelligent life across the vast distances containing clues to our DNA, to our very nature as Earth people.” Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop leads this work April 23–25 in Marian Anderson Hall!
