Among them are the easy-going, melodious white Txakoli—a unique Basque wine chosen as a nod to Maurice Ravel’s own Basque heritage—, and the complex and expressive red Mencía wine from Bierzo, a fine accompaniment to the stylized drama of Bizet’s Carmen. Lighter in texture and density, both the sparkling Cava and the rosado from Rioja represent contemporary takes on more traditional styles—much as De Falla adapted his own culture’s musical traditions to meet the idioms of 20th-century orchestral composition.”

We're reminiscing on PULITZER PRIZE–WINNING composer @gabrielalenafrank 's tenure as composer-in-residence with the Orchestra! Frank held the position from 2019–23, and during this time, she worked with young musicians at the KIPP West Philadelphia Preparatory Charter School while composing her now Pulitzer Prize–winning piece, Picaflor: A Future Myth. We're honored to have given the world premiere of Picaflor in March 2025 and to be part of this brilliant composer's journey.
