Third Life, my article in the recently dropped issue of IRK magazine @irkmagazine , about a series of images created via a collaboration between photographer Robert Farber @robertfarberphotographer and Paris based @atelierlebuisson_interiors@atelierlebuisson_couture . Pasang (@pasang_lhamu_sherpa_akita ) grew up in the Everest region of Nepal, in a culture that reserved mountaineering for men. At 15 she decided that wasn’t her story, traveled to France to become Nepal’s first female mountaineering instructor, summited Everest, and in 2014 was part of the first team of Nepali women to summit K2. Cira (@ciracrowell ) grew up in the American South, where photography wasn’t considered an appropriate path for a girl. Her father eventually handed her a dusty camera from a shelf, a Leicaflex SL2, and that small act became the first step toward a life that led her to become an award-winning filmmaker and the first American-born woman to climb Kanchenjunga, the world’s third highest peak.
The two met on Mount Rainier, where Pasang was guiding, and discovered they had both quietly stopped talking about their dreams to avoid the questions that followed. Together they built a friendship where the silence finally lifted. They went on to do medical treks in Nepal and, after the 2015 earthquake, mobilized relief efforts for villages around Gorkha. Pasang was named one of National Geographic’s 2016 Adventurers of the Year and Cira was selected as one of only 55 photographers selected to represent 100 Years of @leica_camera in the USA. ✨ What would you have missed if you’d listened to the people who told you no? #your21summers
