Gallery Walkthrough 2/5: Morphology Series
From my recent exhibition Encoded Surface at the Dalton Gallery.
The Morphology Series uses 3D modeling software as a kind of digital sketchbook — a space to experiment with form, contour, and the behavior of clay during printing. But not everything that works on the screen survives translation into physical material.
For me, the work exists in that back-and-forth between digital space and the unpredictability of fabrication. The horizontal layering of 3D-printed clay became central to the series, eventually leading to contrasting vertical patterns that reference textiles and shifting perception.
These forms suggest vessels, but the focus gradually moves away from utility and toward surface, rhythm, and the experience of viewing.

Gallery Walkthrough 1/5: Future Flora
From my recent exhibition Encoded Surface at the Dalton Gallery.
Future Flora was created during a residency in Jingdezhen, China, as a reflection on the evolving identity of ceramics in the post-digital age, and first shown at The Center for Craft @centerforcraft
The work is constructed from porcelain modules that branch outward into a tangled network of spheres, connecting historical pottery shards, industrial ceramics, 3D-printed components, and collected artifacts from different moments in time. I think of these objects as carrying different histories and modes of making, all suspended together within a single material system.
The surface imagery draws from altered photographs of moss and lichen collected in the forests around Jingdezhen, blending references to Chinese porcelain traditions with forms of growth that feel unpredictable and constantly evolving.

American artist Thomas Schmidt (@thomasschmidtstudio ) bridges digital precision and ceramic tactility — reimagining clay as a living interface between the virtual and the material.
In his Morphology Series, 3D-printed vessels ripple with woven-like rhythms, where code becomes texture and structure becomes illusion. Each surface carries the traces of both algorithm and hand — a dialogue between repetition and touch, simulation and sediment.
By merging craft and computation, Schmidt transforms ceramics into a study of perception itself — asking what it means to make, feel, and remember in the age of digital reproduction.

I’m excited to share that my “Stacked Vase Series” has been accepted into the Shiwan Cup! This is an international ceramics competition in Foshan, China. Fingers crossed that the work makes it to the museum safe and sound. Then, toes crossed that I win one of the prizes to cover shipping! xoxo
