Documentary filmmakers often find themselves in the position of โstorytellers,โ but how can we shift that dynamic and co-create stories WITH our participants instead of just about them? ๐
This workshop explores how to craft compelling character-driven documentaries by using participatory filmmaking techniques and personal archives to enhance storytelling.
About our teaching artist:
Elodie Edjang is a French-born, Atlanta-bred, Cameroonian creator based in Chicago. Building on a documentary foundation, she explores storytelling through short-form content, character portraits, and participatory filmmaking, blending narrative and documentary techniques. Currently, Elodie is co-directing a short about Kartemquin Filmsโ co-founder, Gordon Quinn, with Red Door Media Collective. Her work-in-progress, Queer Christians, was a 2023 Sisters in Cinema Documentary Fellowship finalist and received a 2023 Chicago DCASE grant.

The Sisters in Cinema Documentary Fellowship is a fellowship program for emerging Black women and gender nonconforming directors based in the Chicagoland area with a short or feature-length non-fiction project.
As part of the program I'll receive a grant for my film @queerchristians , fiscal sponsorship, and individually tailored mentorship that focuses on both professional and project development.
