Daily Record: Shoot Out the Lights—Richard & Linda Thompson (1982). When I was visiting @greenstgrooves with @ingalls1969 , @thinlear , and @niagaramoonmusic over the weekend, Chris pulled the album out and made a general recommendation for it. I took him up on it, and I am glad I did. I have, of course, seen Shoot Out the Lights on many top albums list, but it would not have been on my radar when it was released in 1982 and I have never followed up until now. It is indeed a fine and dark folk rock album that predicts the dissolution of the Thompsons’ marriage and creative partnership.
I have a whole travel essay percolating about my road trip to Boston, but as a teaser, here are four serious music geeks standing outside a record store: me, Thomas, Matt, and Chris. We’re outside @greenstgrooves in Melrose, Massachusetts. Next photo is my haul from that visit along with four of Thomas’s CDs from his and Matt’s show the night before. Shocking, I know, that I did not currently have Debbie Harry’s seminal Rockbird in my collection, but that dilemma has been rectified. It was fantastic spending time with these guys but more on that in the aforementioned essay. In the meantime, check out the music of @thinlear and @niagaramoonmusic on Bandcamp or elsewhere.
Elevator pitch: “It’s ‘Saturday Night Fever’…but JAZZ!” I had this record when I was a kid but it disappeared from my collection decades ago. I had never seen a copy anywhere until yesterday, when I was hanging with @ingalls1969@thinlear and @niagaramoonmusic at @greenstgrooves in Melrose, Massachusetts. From across the store, my gaze fell upon this record, and I knew I had to have it all over again.
