We loved every minute of #LAABF2026! BEST neighbors ever (we knew Nick and Sam were kindred spirits when we saw their tablecloths); so many good conversations with fairgoers; and such a treat to be together in LA. Neither of us was really a camp person, but we’re definitely feeling that post-camp feeling. Thanks @printedmatter_artbookfairs and @artcenteredu for all the care-full work! And thank you @drchrishoff for covering our table on Sunday!
A new zine by therapist Noriko Martinez will be ready in time for the LA Art Book Fair later this week! Over the weekend, Julie printed it (thank you Jun from @risostudioarts for all the help) and started assembly; we’ll staple it after Erin arrives in LA this week. We can’t wait to share the zine with therapists (and perhaps therapy clients and other helpers). Come pick up a copy at our table, H21, Thursday May 7 - Sunday May 10. (And in 2027 look out for Noriko’s experimental, integrative book about therapy!)

The “radical helping” kit (part of our “An Encyclopedia of Radical Helping” project) along with an armload of Thick Press titles is heading to NE DC this weekend! Come meet Erin (our social worker half) at the I ❤️ DC Arts & Activism Party on Saturday from 2-6 at @citystatedc . This event is part of the @beinghumanfest initiated by @natlhumanities . Beats by DJs @ratatomica and @tr0pigal (Leslie). Thank you Leslie and Matt ( @mpavesich ) organizing the event! RSVP link in bio. All ages!
Here’s the latest question from the Thick Press Department of Editing: Should we always capitalize the first letter of a complete sentence after a colon? And here’s the same question, phrased differently: do you think we should always capitalize the first letter after a colon when the second clause is a complete sentence? This is one of the things that keeps us up at night as we edit two new books and what feels like a million “Encyclopedia” entries. A few years ago, we switched from (mostly) APA style to (mostly) Chicago Style—but we stuck with APA’s convention of always capitalizing the first letter after a colon when the sentence is complete. (Chicago Style’s convention is more complicated.) Was this the right move? Sometimes the resulting sentences feel so…severe? interrupted? In a world with so much beyond our control, it’s a joy and a privilege to have agency in this tiny area. But we still don’t know what to do: HELP! (hELP!?)
New concepts just added to the infinite list that fuels our ongoing “Encyclopedia of Radical Helping” project! These all come from Édouard Glissant, who we’ve been “thinking with” for a little while now, reading books by and about him (second and third images) and incorporating some of these ideas into (Julie’s) teaching (last images). We are captivated by Glissant’s poetic vision of cultural relation without homogenization, and we’re curious to see how his work might inform the love- and solidarity-oriented versions of care work that we call “radical helping.”

Worlds converge: Erin’s “Nature Appreciation” group at the senior center in DC has been engaging in collective bookmaking since November! We drew lines and then colored them in, chatting and listening to music (most popular: Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson, and Roberta Flack). We used black felt tip pens, colored pencils, and pokeweed berries on newsprint. We then did some cutting and color-copying to create pages for two kinds of books: a one-sheet zine and a regular zine. Grateful to have been inspired by Thick Press collaborators @design____ma and @gracedplace and the “prana” line drawing activity they developed for “selfcarefully”gatherings. And @knustpress for the idea of collective bookmaking. #pokeweed
⭐️Feeling so lucky⭐️that we had the chance to travel together to Mexico City for Index Art Book Fair! We spent time with our beloved collaborators, Andrea, MJ, and Mark; distributed lots of books; collected content for the continuation of “An Encyclopedia of Radical Helping;” met new people; and fit in a little sightseeing and a lot of eating. Sadly we didn’t get any pictures of our amazing book fair neighbors, Jacob and Alma from @ingabooks or our new friends from Belgium, @bebebooks.be Thank you @indexartbookfair@kurimanzutto (especially the kind security guard) and @casabosques for the hospitality.
The “radical helping” kit is going to Mexico City—and so are we (along with lots of books)! Come visit us next week, Thursday-Sunday, at @indexartbookfair at @kurimanzutto
