Our free quarterly self-defense seminars are back for 2026. Misfit Combat is proud to welcome back Guro Jay @fmatrix01 of Visayan Eskrima and Chinwe “Aqualtune” Oniah of Filhos De Bimba Capoeira @capoeirabayarea for a free 3 hour seminar on February 21st from 1 to 4PM. This class will blend Afro-Brazilian and Filipino Martial Art techniques. Participants will learn fundamental movements of both Capoeira and Eskrima with applied historical context. About Eskrima: Filipino Martial Arts, known as Arnis, Eskrima, or Kali, evolved through centuries of adaptation and resistance in the Philippines against Imperialism. Rooted in indigenous warrior traditions and shaped by strategies and survival, FMA blends weaponry empty-hand combat, and movement. This system of FMA, The Visayan Style Corto Kadena (VSCK) founded by the late Maestro Umpad, is fused movement and lethality—an intuitive art utilizing flow, range, and adaptability. About Capoeira: Developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil, and later practiced by liberated Africans and native Brazilians, Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art widely known as a dance-like fight or a fight-like dance. A means of self defense, capoeira was practiced in secret to preserve cultural traditions and rituals. Please join us in honoring these two traditions, taught by two incredibly knowledgeable instructors! This seminar is FREE to the public with RSVP—see flyer QR code for sign-ups or click on Misfit’s LinkTree. You don’t want to miss it! Hello everyones, We recently celebrated 12 years of FdB Bay Area this past March. We’re so grateful to the folks who’ve contributed to these 12 years. However, it was a bittersweet celebration because at the end of this month April 29, will be our last OFFICIAL class. This was a difficult decision to make. I’m happy + proud to lead this group. However, at this time, I have other priorities that require me to step away.

The group that has been regularly training is committed to staying engaged with this art form. If you’re curious about training with them, send an email to be connected. If we are able to come and open our doors again, I hope that we will have your support. As for me, I’ll continue to develop my own capoeira - studying, reading, researching - and support the many capoeira groups in the Bay Area and around the country who continue to share this art. Many thanks to our teachers, Mestre Nenel and Professor Malandro and the many people who’ve contributed and supported Filhos de Bimba Bay Area School of Capoeira for the past 12 years. See you at the next roda,
