🎵 #MinneapolisMonday: Prince Wins Best Choreography at the VMAs 🏆 • September 5, 1986
By 1986, @JanetJackson was stepping into superstardom with “Control,” while @Prince and @TheRevolution were already pushing visual storytelling and performance into another dimension. Seeing so many worlds collide here (Janet representing both the Jackson dynasty and her new creative lane with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, while Prince continued building his Purple Kingdom) makes this moment feel even more special.
Beating out the likes of Pat Benatar, Morris Day, and Madonna, Prince and The Revolution took home the award for their performance in the “Raspberry Beret” video.
While often associated with large dance routines, choreography can also be about movement, visual storytelling, and how an artist brings a world to life on screen. The creativity shown in “Raspberry Beret,” which Prince also directed, is a perfect example of that.
This rare clip is cool for so many reasons. See for yourself ⏪

•• PRINCE ••
Collage for one of my favorites @prince
Prince has always felt different to me. Always so real about the way he existed in the world. He didn’t seem like he was trying to fit into anything or prove anything. He just was.
Soft and strong at the same time. Bold, sensual, mysterious… and completely unbothered by the boxes people tried to put him in. The way he embraced his feminine energy wasn’t loud or forced, it felt natural, like he had made peace with every part of himself and decided to live from that place, no matter what anyone thought.
And that really stayed with me.
Because most people spend so much time holding parts of themselves back, trying to look right, act right, be accepted. But he didn’t shrink. He expanded. He wore what he wanted, moved how he felt, expressed desire and vulnerability without shame. There was something deeply freeing in watching that, even from a distance.
It made me question things in myself too. Like… where am I holding back? What would it feel like to just be, without filtering so much?
I think that’s why he still inspires me. Not just because he was incredibly talented, but because he showed, quietly and powerfully, that you don’t have to choose between strength and softness. You can be both. And that’s where the real magic is.
His legacy isn’t just music. It’s liberation.
