📺 #VintageAd: Luster’s S-Curl “The Man’s Look” 👨🏾🦱 • 1988
⭐️ Featuring: Salli Richardson-Whitfield (@sallirichwhit )
If this were a rom-com, it’d be titled “When Jheri Met Salli.” 👩🏾❤️💋👨🏾
Offering a stylish alternative to the Jheri Curl, Luster’s S-Curl defined Black men’s grooming in the late ’80s.
With sleek marketing aimed at the “sophisticated man” (and a subtle promise that good hair meant getting the girl) Luster’s was a key player in Black haircare throughout the decade.💈
Didn’t Dondré Whitfield have a curl on “The Cosby Show” back in the day? It all makes sense 😏

Charlie & Company
“Charlie & Company” is a tv series that ran from 1985-86. Regarded as CBS’ answer to “The Cosby Show”, the sitcom followed a middle class family living on the South Side of Chicago. The series starred Flip Wilson and @msgladysknight as Charles and Diana Richmond. Charles, an employee at the state highway department, and Diana, a schoolteacher, try to juggle work and life while raising three outspoken children; played by Kristoff St. John, Fran Robinson and @jaleelwhite . Della Reese joined the cast later in the season as the Charlie’s sister-in-law, Aunt Rachel.
Reviews for the show were mostly positive. When it came to “The Cosby Show”, Wilson insisted there wasn’t a comparison. “They say Bill’s got a family and I’ve got a family. They say he’s a comic and I’m a comic. He’s black and I’m black. There’s no comparison. It’s like saying John Wayne was ripping off Gary Cooper by shooting Indians.”
Aside from Cosby comparisons, the series also faced stiff competition. Scheduled at their time slot, Wednesday’s at 9, was ABC’s “Dynasty”; a ratings juggernaut. Going against a top 10 show didn’t deter Wilson; in fact it did the opposite. He told the Associated Press “If you see me in a fight with a gorilla, help the gorilla. If I believe in something enough to do it, I go in to win. I’m up against ‘Dynasty.’ They say say I don’t have a chance. I’m in show business, I don’t want anyone to prejudge. Just put me in there and give me a chance. I’m going to fight the gorilla.”
If it don’t work, the Mona Lisa was a man! That’s how I feel. - Flip Wilson
Unfortunately the show didn’t last. CBS cancelled the series in May of 1986. I watched an episode online and thought it deserved to last longer. The family had their own dynamic that was different from the Huxtables. I’m not sure what the general feedback was during it’s lone season (it pulled an 11.6 rating, 68th out of 82 shows that year). But I think it would’ve been cool to give people options when it came to seeing Black families on TV.

#FirstFamilyFridays🦚: Inside The Victory Tour • Kansas City, MO • July 6, 1984
Before the lights dimmed and the curtains rose on one of the biggest concert tours of the 1980s, the excitement in Kansas City was already at an all-time high. Local news cameras captured fans counting down the hours until The Jacksons brought the Victory Tour to Arrowhead Stadium.
By 1984, Michael Jackson had become the biggest star on the planet, and it was clear that the chemistry within the group had naturally changed from The Jacksons’ earlier tours. And while much of the spotlight centered around Michael, moments like these are still a reminder that when The Jacksons come together, there’s a magic that can’t be duplicated. Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, Randy, and Michael each brought their own personality, musicianship, style, and energy to the stage, helping shape one of the most important groups in music history.
Take a trip back to one of the biggest tours of all time ⏪

🎵 #MinneapolisMonday: Prince Wins Best Choreography at the VMAs 🏆 • September 5, 1986
By 1986, @JanetJackson was stepping into superstardom with “Control,” while @Prince and @TheRevolution were already pushing visual storytelling and performance into another dimension. Seeing so many worlds collide here (Janet representing both the Jackson dynasty and her new creative lane with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, while Prince continued building his Purple Kingdom) makes this moment feel even more special.
Beating out the likes of Pat Benatar, Morris Day, and Madonna, Prince and The Revolution took home the award for their performance in the “Raspberry Beret” video.
While often associated with large dance routines, choreography can also be about movement, visual storytelling, and how an artist brings a world to life on screen. The creativity shown in “Raspberry Beret,” which Prince also directed, is a perfect example of that.
This rare clip is cool for so many reasons. See for yourself ⏪

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor.”🥂
I remember watching the music videos for “Independent Women,” “Survivor,” “Bootylicious” (and the remix with Missy Elliott 👌🏾) on BET & MTV nonstop. If video views counted as album sales, then “Survivor” easily went platinum in my house.
“Emotion” has always been one of my favorites from the album. From the harmonies to the music video, you could tell that this group was special. “Survivor” would go on to sell 10 million copies worldwide, cementing Destiny’s Child as one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. Still feeling all the emotions after seeing “Michael” last night. Without saying too much, one of my biggest takeaways was how refreshing it felt to see Michael Jackson as a human being, not just the King of Pop.
It’s a reminder that even though Michael was the biggest star on the planet, he still craved the basic human needs we all do: friendship, love, safety, and understanding. Take a look and enjoy this beautiful performance from a man the world often mythologized, yet was human like the rest of us ⏪

📺 Michael Jackson: The Greatest Artist Of The Decade • “Friday Night Videos” • October 13, 1989
It’s been a minute since I’ve done a #FirstFamilyFridays🦚, but an occasion like this felt like the perfect time to bring it back.
With the excitement surrounding today’s release of the Michael Jackson biopic, “Michael,” it felt like the right time to revisit this vintage clip from “Friday Night Videos.”
Everything about this moment feels special. You’ve got a celebration of Michael Jackson at the height of his reign, the nostalgia of “Friday Night Videos,” and appearances from Tempestt Bledsoe and Darryl M. Bell, two stars from NBC’s biggest shows of the era. It’s a unique snapshot of 80s Black Culture all in one place.
As we get ready for the film, let’s celebrate with this look back at the King’s legendary visuals that shaped generations and changed pop culture forever.

🎵 #MinneapolisMonday: Sheila E. Performs “Holly Rock” On “Saturday Night Live” • November 16, 1985
I finally found a clip I’ve been hunting down for years!
I posted @sheilae ’s performance of “A Love Bizarre” from “Saturday Night Live” a few years back, but there was another clip from that night I could never track down.
That search ended the other night when the missing piece finally surfaced.
Crafted by Prince during one of his most prolific creative periods, “Holly Rock” is a high-octane groove taken even higher thanks to Sheila E.’s showmanship.
This is why they call her the Queen of Percussion.
Sheila and the band left it all on the floor in this one. Literally; head to the 4:28 mark.
