Don’t you see freedom when you look at me?
I wrote these words as an affirmation for myself/my people/us and they ring true for me more in this week of Juneteenth. I wrote it for my Black trans family members who couldn’t be free, who were robbed of their life too soon. I wrote it for the generations of ancestors who live through every breath I take. I wrote it to remind myself on days when our transness in the hands of corporations becomes profitable in a slogan, but our deaths seem more profitable than protecting our lives. This Juneteenth I dream of a new Pride where morality is not measured by algorithms, sponsors, and capital. I dream of the new Pride where we are all free, where our identities are not used to justify human rights violations. I dream of you and I, together.
