Shop Sounds Vol. 3 On Saturday, May 16th, SLCKR Studio welcomes Them Local and Forin to bring you a very special edition of Shop Sounds! The incredible Katarina Especial and Nave Mãe join us at SLCKR Studio to share an eclectic selection of sounds from all over the world that will surely have the community dancing. Fred and Katarina are co-founders of Them Local, a curated online store with a new brick and mortar location in Fishtown’s very own Forin Café on Coral Street. Introducing the ‘Good Piece’ collaboration between @themlocal and @submpolvo , brought to life by @softrock_pt 🪨 Based in Ericeira, Portugal, SOFTROCK is a creative endeavor dedicated to crafting unique, handmade functional sculptures that draw inspiration from the rocky shapes and natural landscapes around them. Each piece is meticulously sculpted by hand without the use of molds, highlighting a slow, thoughtful process that brings out the true texture of the materials. SR seeks to create experiences, not just objects, infusing comfort derived from nature into spaces while adding artistic detail and imagination. Each creation is tailored to order, allowing for adaptability to various settings. Members of Them Local, Frederico and Katarina, share a deep-rooted love for the northern coastal beaches of Portugal, especially between their hometowns of Viana do Castelo and Porto, where the tides surge and the rocks stand firm. Katarina, who grew up in Viana do Castelo, met Pedro in the early 2000s; they not only share their surname but also a bond forged through their love for nature and music. Pedro delves into the heart of nature, where his genuine affection intertwines with the ocean, carefully exploring its uncharted shallow areas. Portugal plays its role with a rich seafood culture, emphasizing the methods of capture and the importance of locally sourced freshness as part of the dining experience—you can never predict what will be available or the story behind it. Seeing SOFTROCK’s take on Pedro’s photography evokes a sense of ‘home’ in our new home. The blending of cultures and creativity is what keeps us close together. This piece isn’t for sale; it’s our spatial mascot, inviting you to hang out with us on the second floor of @forincafe at 2041 Coral St, Philadelphia. Born in China and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Shai FM is a DJ and producer who moves fluidly across the bass and club spectrum. Now based in Philadelphia, he’s earned a reputation for shapeshifting rhythms, bridging disparate tempos and textures, anchored by weighty low-end pressure. He’s shared stages with artists like Batu, Two Shell and Nikki Nair, has a monthly show on Philly’s Great Circles online radio and has been featured on Resident Advisor’s Mix of the Day. As a producer, his tracks have earned spins on platforms like Dekmantel, Rinse FM, NTS and Lot Radio, along with support from artists like Om Unit, Interstellar Funk, Re:ni, Aloka, Teqmun and more. His latest EP “Polarize” on Elicit Records channels razor-sharp rhythms and immersive sound design into a statement of precision. Our first guest and host @papaya.official will lead us on a hypnotic downtempo journey beginning at 3 PM 🙂‍↕️🫂 DJ Papaya’s approach to mixing draws upon bass music, downtempo, and leftfield electronics, to craft surreal and emotionally complex narratives, rich in texture and rooted in the sensibilities of dub. They are a co-founder of the ambient/experimental series Spindrift ( @spindrift.phl ), as well as the bass music party Chrysalis ( @chrysalis.goop ).
