Based in Ericeira, Portugal, SOFTROCK is a creative endeavor dedicated to crafting unique, handmade functional sculptures that draw inspiration from the rocky shapes and natural landscapes around them. Each piece is meticulously sculpted by hand without the use of molds, highlighting a slow, thoughtful process that brings out the true texture of the materials. SR seeks to create experiences, not just objects, infusing comfort derived from nature into spaces while adding artistic detail and imagination. Each creation is tailored to order, allowing for adaptability to various settings.
Members of Them Local, Frederico and Katarina, share a deep-rooted love for the northern coastal beaches of Portugal, especially between their hometowns of Viana do Castelo and Porto, where the tides surge and the rocks stand firm. Katarina, who grew up in Viana do Castelo, met Pedro in the early 2000s; they not only share their surname but also a bond forged through their love for nature and music. Pedro delves into the heart of nature, where his genuine affection intertwines with the ocean, carefully exploring its uncharted shallow areas. Portugal plays its role with a rich seafood culture, emphasizing the methods of capture and the importance of locally sourced freshness as part of the dining experience—you can never predict what will be available or the story behind it.
Seeing SOFTROCK’s take on Pedro’s photography evokes a sense of ‘home’ in our new home. The blending of cultures and creativity is what keeps us close together.
