Took a while to post that one cause most of you know how much I don’t like pictures but this august @plantationofficial came to my place and studio and did her magic. We are finally free from looking at the same single artist headshot of me. She took so many great shots, foraging in my stuff and the city. It’s also the perfect time for a reintroduction so: My name is Diane Cescutti, I’m a transmedia artist based in Saint Etienne France. I create weavings videos, 3D animations, installations, interactive installations with videogame and woven soft keyboards. My work explores the technological, historical, aesthetic and mathematical links between textile, weaving and computers 🪢🧮🌐 Il m’a fallu un certain temps pour poster ça, la plupart d’entre vous savent à quel point je n’aime pas les photos, mais en août @plantationofficial est venu chez moi et à mon atelier a fait marcher sa magie. Nous sommes enfin libres de ne plus voir la même photo d’artiste de moi. Elle a pris tellement de superbes photos ,fouillant dans mes affaires et dans la ville. C’est aussi le moment idéal pour une réintroduction donc : Je m’appelle Diane Cescutti, je suis une artiste transmédia basée à Saint-Etienne en France. Je crée des tissages, des vidéos, des animations 3D, des installations, des installations interactives avec des jeux vidéo et des claviers souples tissés. Mon travail explore les liens technologiques, historiques, esthétiques et mathématiques entre le textile, le tissage et les ordinateurs 🪢🧮🌐

La semaine dernière je suis allée au festival d’innovation digitale @fakugesi en Afrique du Sud. J’étais finaliste pour les #fakugesiawards2023 dans la catégorie Digital Art avec mon œuvre “Nosukaay”. Je suis rentrée à la maison avec le trophée. 🏆 Un énorme merci à @fakugesi pour ce festival merveilleux, pour l’accueil et au jury pour ce prix ⚡️✳️ Un grand merci, muito Obrigado à Edimar Rosa @edimarrosa817 avec qui j’ai tissé le textile clé de cette œuvre. Un grand merci à @ensba_lyon et son poste diplôme art piloté par @oulimata.gueye qui m’ont permis de travailler sur cette pièce À @imageimatgecentredart et @the_real_ida.soul pour avoir tenu dès les premier croquis à présenter cette oeuvre. Last week I went to the digital innovation festival @fakugesi in South Africa. I was a finalist for the digital art category with my artwork “Nosukaay”. Nosukaay won Interactive Art+ Golden Nica 🏆 My brother asked me what kind of maniac I was when he saw me coding on windows notepad. Only the future will tell. I deeply thank the jury of @arselectronica and @emiko.ogawa for their empowering and powerful words that put my self saboteur to silence. Winning the Golden Nica feels like I made an albatross 🏌🏽‍♀️. I want to renew my thanks to @oulimata.gueye @ensba_lyon , @imageimatgecentredart , @villa_sln @le19m , @raw.gram2011 that supported the work and researches at different steps and of course my manjak weaving teacher and partner @edimilsonmarioca I’m so grateful for all the encounters, conversations that I had during the festival. Felt like the totally spies with @__katecrawford__ and @beatiewolfe on stage. Blessed to have met with such amazing creators.

Join us for this week’s Participant Presentation. On Wednesday, 22 April, Diane Cescutti (@themissing_texture ) will present Gods of Calculation, an ongoing project that weaves together writing, videogame development, interactive systems, and the making of a new textile keyboard. In this presentation, Diane Cescutti will share the development of the project in greater depth and invite the audience to experience a demo of the interactive installation. We wrapped up the 10th edition of Forecast Mentorships with the premiere of the six final projects presented across different venues in Berlin. Each project is paired with an essay by an invited expert reflecting on the proposal. "The Oracle Does Not Answer" is an essay by Berlin-based curator Michael Dieminger on Diane Cescutti's work, Gods of Calculation. "Every day, millions of people turn to machines to ask what might come next. Climate models anticipate floods before rivers rise. Financial algorithms sense fluctuations before traders do. During pandemics, epidemiological systems sketch the contours of waves before hospitals fill. Dating apps model the likelihood of love between people who have never met. Across the planet, futures are rendered calculable. Screens glow in darkened rooms. Infrastructures translate questions into forecasts. What appears are probabilities, graphs, projections, forms that promise orientation while withholding their conditions of possibility. The machine speaks but does not explain. In this opacity, consultation emerges. These systems’ outputs organize uncertainty, inviting acts of deciphering. Prediction becomes a site where meaning is not given, but produced: unevenly distributed, shaped by those who define the model, the dataset, and the parameters of legibility." Diane Cescutti's – @themissing_texture – work intertwines weaving and computer code, revealing unexpected connections. By traversing these intertwined paths, she uncovers the ethereal algorithm linking both worlds. Through a histofuturist, speculative and narrative approach, she explores the historical, technological, mathematical and aesthethic links between weaving, textiles and computers. Join the Artist Talk at C/O Berlin: Downloading Vernacular Images—A conversation between Ruth Patir and Diane Cescutti To conclude their work-stay at C/O Berlin, the two artists will discuss their affinity for breathing a life of zeros and ones into ancient and mythological deities. Patir will moderate and introduce Diane Cescutti’s in-progress work Gods of Calculation, a research project and installation focusing on the world’s top supercomputers—absent from Africa despite the continent’s crucial role in providing raw materials for parts. Weaving a speculative narrative, Cescutti imagines that each supercomputer offers calculation power to an African nation via a so-called twin stationed locally. Each supercomputer’s operating system takes on the form of an avatar that resembles a deity, and facilitates communication between machines and people. The locals thus refer to them as the “Gods of Calculation.” The artists will discuss the moral dilemmas and implications of working with these materials on the cusp of the fourth industrial revolution. They ask whether one can escape the Western technological gaze embedded in the machines, and whether spirituality and technology actually live as cross pollinators. After presenting their projects at last month’s Forecast Forum, the six mentees of Forecast 10 are now entering the next phase: working closely with their mentors to further develop their ideas. In addition to their ongoing collaborations, each mentor–mentee tandem will spend several days together in intensive work-stays at partner institutions across Berlin, engaging in both creative exchange and concrete mentoring.
