The Halide Project

Submissions are open for The Halide Project’s first community zine! Follow the link in our bio to access the submission form. We are accepting any theme made using any analogue or alternative process from The Halide Project members, lab monitors, workshop instructors, and board members. Everybody who submits will be included and receive a free copy of the zine. We are asking for a sliding scale donation of $5-10 from each contributor to help with the production cost. Please reach out if this is a barrier and we will figure it out! The deadline to submit is Friday, June 5th.

Join us this Saturday, May 16th at the Halide project for a night of fun and connection as we celebrate the launch of "A Light in the Dark." This was our first collaborative issue and it has been such a joy to join forces and connect our communities, we hope you can join us and maybe make a new friend! Join us on May 18th at 7pm EST for a virtual artist talk with Caroline Roberts whose work was featured in our recent exhibition, “[Im]printing Memory.” Caroline’s work contemplates the uneasy relationship between people and the wildness of the natural world, and her personal connection to place provides the spark for each new body of work. Often working outdoors, her use of cyanotype, lumen printing, and the combination of the two in the cyanolumen process results in a visual echoing of the tension between chaos and control that exists in humanity’s relationship with nature. Make tintypes outside! Join us on June 9th and 11th for a two-day, hands-on tintype workshop. The format and materials used will mirror instructor Maurene Cooper’s work on tin and glass with natural light in Philadelphia’s historic park system. Day one will cover the chemistry, practice, and process of wet plate collodion, as well as an orientation in large format camera use. Students will learn to shoot indoors on tin, practice pouring and processing plates in different types of darkrooms. Day two will focus on “how to see and photograph natural light” in a range of outdoor locations at Orkney Park in Northern Liberties. Students will explore subjects from architecture to plant life and learn how color translates in the wet plate process. They will also prepare, varnish and develop plates using 19th century methods in table-top darkrooms suited for tintype making. Follow the link in our bio to learn more and to sign up!

Come explore the third dimension of photography by learning how to create a “photo object” using clay, cyanotype, and mixed media during two online sessions on May 16th and 23rd. During the first session, we will discuss what the third dimension in photography means, and the intentions that may lead an artist to integrate volume and texture into their photographic project. Then, you will learn how to create a cyanotype print on clay using vegetable gelatin. During the second session, we will cover numerous examples of aesthetic enhancements and added meaning that mixed media brings to three-dimensional photography. You will also learn in detail how to add a golden reflection, and a shiny appearance to your cyanotype on clay using watercolor and resin. Students will provide their own materials and supplies, and a list will be sent out prior to the first session. Follow the link in our bio to sign up!

Calling for Lab Monitors! Do you have prior experience working in a darkroom and want to be a part of a vibrant photo community? Then apply to become a Lab Monitor. Volunteer 6 hours per week of your time to assist Halide members with their photographic questions/needs and in return you will have free access to our darkroom. Here is what is happening at Halide this month! We have two events this month with artists who were both featured in our recent exhibition “[Im]printing Memory.” One event is a virtual workshop exploring three dimensional photography and the other is a virtual artist talk. Then, at the end of May we are hosting an introductory workshop that is already sold out! If you missed this one, be on the lookout for more like it in the coming months. Have you ever wanted to help out during a film processing or cyanotype workshop? Here is your chance! We are building a new TA program and are looking for volunteer TA’s that will serve as our first six month cohort. You can expect to assist two workshops per month and it’s a great opportunity to be an invaluable part of Halide’s educational programming while being exposed to different teaching styles and photographic processes. Join us tomorrow evening at 5pm EST for a virtual artist talk with Séverine Chauveau! In her experiments with the materiality of the photographic medium, Séverine Chauveau explores her own relationship with time, disappearance, memory, and forgetting. In creating photographic objects as small “souvenirs,” she moves intimately through her questioning of time as encapsulated in the material of photography. Séverine’s work is featured in our current exhibition at The Halide Project, [Im]printing Memory open through April 19th. A Q&A will follow her presentation. Follow the link in our bio to sign up!

Our current exhibition, “[Im]printing Memory,” brings together three artists using alternative and historic photographic processes to create photographic objects imbued with the weight of memory and history. Séverine Chauveau is one of those artists we are so happy to be featured in the show. Her work has been presented at The Halide Project in Philadelphia, the Experimental Photo Festival in Barcelona, Spain - where she led workshops on the concept of photo-objects - and at the Universities of Avignon and La Réunion. There, she co-hosted a lecture on experimental photography with Marc Lenot, author of the seminal work “Jouer contre les appareils” (Playing Against the Cameras), Arles, Photosynthèses, 2022. Her work has also been published in various art and photography magazines, including Suboart, The Hand Magazine, PhotoTrouvée, Assembla, and Aeonian Magazine. Chauveau studied Fine Arts at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University and learned Haute Couture embroidery from Marylène Eyral, winner of the 2025 Influential Women of the World Award, at Studio Eyral. Our Platinum/Palladium Printing workshop was so much fun! Over two days the students learned about the history of the process, looked at notable examples, and learned through demonstration how to make their own prints.
