Charity Vilakazi’s work @artvilakazi will be part of our exhibition at RMB Latitudes. She is a multidisciplinary artist based in Johannesburg.
“I get my overly imaginative views from my father and my grandmother. Growing up, being the last-born girl, I spent my days annoying my grandmother and pestering her with questions and I was never satisfied. I always wanted to do more. My grandmother always asked me what I dreamt about and that I should write down every dream and nightmare I had in the night.”

“On my street when I was a teen there were a few houses owned by civil servants who grew roses. The roses all had borders of slanted pavers, and woodchips scattered around them making sure that they didn’t have to compete with anything so unsightly as a dandelion. I seem to see these same roses in little Karoo towns, lattice-windowed bungalows in Jersey, and the rustic suburban sprawl between beach towns in Italy. Serious men with serious roses. These aren’t roses to tuck behind your ear, or arrange in a little cut glass vase in a fit of Daphne du Maurier-ness: they are sentinels, tired of it, such is the beauty of a rose.”

You can see the sunset from up here
At RMB Latitudes Art Fair 2026, the gallery presents You can see the sunset from up here, taking its title from a work by Sitaara Stodel. Suggesting distance, perspective, and moments of reflection, the title gestures towards the varied ways in which artists observe and interpret the world around them. The presentation brings together contemporary artists working across painting, photography, textile and sewn works, and mixed media. Through distinct material approaches and visual languages, the exhibition reflects the breadth of concerns informing contemporary artistic practice.
Moving between personal narrative, abstraction, memory, landscape, and process, the works engage with both intimate and broader social realities.
Rather than focussing on a singular theme, the presentation foregrounds the coexistence of different voices, mediums, and viewpoints, offering a considered snapshot of contemporary South African art.

Join us in the gallery today, for the opening of the group show “Below the Surface”
Below the Surface gathers works that explore what lies just out of view. Across print and mixed media, marks act as traces of movement, touch and memory.
Forms slip, fall and reappear.
Nothing settles for long.
The exhibition considers how meaning gathers quietly, under the surface of things.
