This circles back to when I was a little girl. I have always been a child who was fascinated by the creative industry. Back then it looked like being a tv presenter(YoTv ofcos) or dancing. Because that was the only form of expression that I was exposed to. In primary and high school I was part of the Indian dance group. I am dreaming all those dreams whilst Michelin star plating uphuthu ne-spinach with a swoosh of either mayonnaise or tomato sauce 😂. As I grew up I knew that naah my love for food goes beyond being a chef.
A shift happened when I was in grade 10 and I took the science stream subjects. I knew this is it, which I later(in grade 12 cabanga😂) found discovered the food science and technology.
Which landed me in Cape Town. (From Dundee to Cape Town, all on my own. Thanks to my big sister who convinced my mom that I will be just fine.) Through following these dancers and tv personalities on social media and attending talk events. Where these personalities were talking about their journeys, the world of the visual arts opened up for me. (Mind you I am going to these events during the weekend and every Mondays we had a test. Which I had to ace, because I didn’t leave Dundee to come play and besides I can’t afford to fail because I know our situation at home.)
I knew of galleries, which I visited and made me feel at home. I graduated, studied further graduated got a job. Guess what, what a mentally and physically taxing industry, love love it. As a person who struggles with staying idle for so long. Here I was in-between lunch breaks and on weekends when I off, scribbling on paper. Started creating using printing paper and bic pen. The more I created the more it made sense. Fast forward to today, I am here doing what I loved. All that it took was following my heart, taking the risks and doing what I love.
Ohhh Facebook memories🥹🙏🏾✨.

(Autumn leaves in large scale, it was a great challenge for me and I am so happy to have stretched and grew a new bone)
I am standing here at work and I am filled with so much gratitude for a beautiful Saturday I had at #montreuxjazzfestival in Franschhoek.
I am reminded of how much Jazz music carried me from being an artist who was still finding her way. To today, an artist who has a voice. During my early days, I played John and Alice Coltrane’s music over and over again. Their music helped me reach to a place where I was able to meet the artist of my dreams. How when I was done creating a piece I would look at it or post it and add their songs to my stories and posts. Jazz for me is that cherry on top of my artwork cake. Funny enough “Hip Hop saved my life, thats such a cliche quote” girl….yup a hip hop head through and through. But Jazz takes me to another world.
Yestarday, #mandisidyantyis performed and I am like this is what my theme ‘Isibopho’ is all about. Then #homieloverfriend set was on and all that I saw is ‘Tales of Sisterhood’. Oh than #thandiswamazwai performed ‘Nizalwa Ngobani’ I was reminder of how much the story of ‘SKIN’ goes beyond me. And of the responsibility I have to keep on creating SKIN ukuze singazilibali ukuthi Sizalwa Ngobani.
Shuuu, I don’t take this blessing of creating lightly.
Theme: SKIN
Title: Singular or collectively. Either or.
The more you create the more you introduced to the layers of your craft. I am enjoying this layer of skin. It has opened up an internal dialogue that I never knew was left unspoken.
Here, ‘Singular or collectively. Either or.’, I was left shaken by the realisation that the tales of my voice were spoken before I was even a thought.
The experiences that were lived before me are similar if not the same to mine, as a young Black girl. Different times would assume a lesser degree. Mine that Im walking past are mental and I believe the ones my kin experienced were more physical. I give thanks to the light that guides me for the chains are shackled one line at a time.
Its been a week and my heart is still reminiscing.
My first 2nd last Sunday kwaLanga and I had a great time. Apart from the art and the music, my other favourite moment was seeing the children of kwaLanga happy and having fun whilst learning.
