Leslie Kern author of the best selling book “Feminist City” of @versobooks will be discussing with The Future Left her latest work on the myths of gentrification propagandized by developers and city officials near you. ———————— “An excellent job of puncturing the myths and exposing the ideologies that make gentrification seem natural, inevitable, and desirable. And with incisive clarity, she develops an account of what a radical, intersectional anti-gentrification politics might look like.” – David Madden, co-author of In Defense of Housing —————- “Arms geographers, cultural theorists, planners, and the general public with an essential understanding of the myths, markings, and formation of global gentrification.” – Brandi Thompson Summers, author of Black in Place

We teamed up with @curate.la to call for accountability, transparency, and diversification in Los Angeles art institutions. We researched the historical context of the United States (research report link in bio ), then honed in on investigating the leadership positions within major LA art institutions. Repost from @curate.la : UNMASK THE TOP is a report on the directive makeup of our local arts and culture spaces, specifically those held at an institutional level. In collaboration with the political research organization @thefutureleft , Curate LA has taken a closer look at the top tables of 12 Los Angeles organizations for their accountability, transparency, and diversification. In the first stage of our research, we’ve collected the race, sex, affiliations, and political contributions by their board members and trustees. Our goal with this research is to disclose the decision-makers that hold power and inform your experience, your transaction, and often your endorsement of a space through attendance or shared online content. L.A.’s status as an international capital for art and culture is nothing without its thriving, cultural ecosystem, and it’s always been our mission to strive for an equal creative landscape for ALL. As unionization movements proliferate around the world, and after a nationwide summer of unrest for Black lives and social justice, we aim to make our local cultural institutions accountable for their public pledges and campaigns, and for these to be reflected at all levels of their operations. We expect accountability, transparency, and diversification from these organizations, and every existing or future organization looking to our city for examples of new standards in diversification, equality, and leadership. Swipe to learn more and share our findings and demands. Note of potential change: João Ribas is the Executive Director of RedCat and Ravi Rajan is the president of Cal Arts. We gave a point to Redcat since Ravi oversees Redcat and is technically in leadership. We may edit this in the future to reflect the leadership of Redcat exclusively to provide further clarity. Who Do You Protect? is an official selection of the 2021 Palm Springs International Short Film Festival (@psfilmfest ). Our film will screen at the Camelot Theatres on Saturday, June 26th at 2:30p. Tickets go on sale June 9th. More soon. This is a collective effort that was made by members of The Future Left in partnership with @peoplescitycouncil . We are so proud to be sharing this film with an international audience. Who Do You Protect? examines the corruption of the LA police union and their relationship to former district attorney Jackie Lacey and legislatures through the story of Daniel Hernandez. Daniel was a young man who was murdered by an LAPD officer, Toni McBride whose father heads the union. There have been no repercussions for this killing, and the Hernandez family have fought for justice for Daniel and all victims of police violence since. Special thanks to the Hernandez family, everyone who sat down and shared their time with us, everyone who helped make this film, our friends at @zebulonla and @navel.la , and those who donated to our GoFundMe. Today we introduce our study series for 2022. We have provided a link in our bio for signing up (bit.ly/study-series). The Future Left collective discussion group will read texts and create works tackling abolition, climate justice, and philosophical futures. This is a casual setting with no requirement of attendance amount to participate. The goal of the group is to read texts to gain insight for critical discussion and additionally there will be an opportunity to generate writing for our upcoming publication. TFL is choosing to read these books that seem relevant to our community, not to subscribe to specific ideologies, but to open up the critical discourse. Our first meeting is Sunday, January 23rd, 2022. The first book in the series, The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber, Wengrow, and Williams, is about how democracy, the enlightenment, and most ideas of progress in the west were actually in part from the interaction between indigenous intellectuals and the early European colonists. For the first meeting, We will be discussing the first chapter and planning for the rest of our sessions. We are pleased to include works from @benjaminbratton , @jairusgrove , and @loneberry .
