Hartanto’s previous film won a Special Jury Award at Tribeca. Now, with DALY CITY, Hartanto is also the first Indonesian-American filmmaker to qualify for the Academy Awards.
DALY CITY is an autobiographical story about an Indonesian boy and his mother who bring Chinese takeout to a church potluck and pretend it’s a traditional family dish. The boy’s quiet observations lead him to question his parents’ behavior as they strive to find a sense of belonging in a new country.
Shot in locations where the story actually occurred, and proudly starring an Indonesian cast, the film is a tender and complex portrait of the American Dream and a rare look at the Indonesian diaspora.
