We are pleased to announce that legendary musician and humanitarian Elton John, Laureate of the 15th Glenn Gould Prize, has selected acclaimed Canadian mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo @thee.dangelo as the recipient of the prestigious Glenn Gould Protégé Prize.⁠ ⁠ This prize celebrates the vital role of inspiration and encouragement between generations, fostering young artists whose work shows the promise of a lifetime of impact through the arts.⁠ ⁠ Emily D’Angelo’s meteoric rise has firmly established her as one of the most exciting and critically acclaimed artists of her generation. Since her professional debut at 21 as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro at the Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi, she has performed at the world’s top opera companies. Following her second album Freezing for Deutsche Grammophon (@dgclassics ), she was named the 2025 Opus Klassik “Female Singer of the Year.”⁠ ⁠ It’s easy to see why she was Elton John’s choice. The @metopera Music Director @nezetseguin conducts the opera, which opened the Met’s 24–25 season. Out now on your preferred streaming platform. __ This adaptation of @george.brant ’s acclaimed play is a production that wrestles with the ethical quandaries and psychological toll of 21st-century warfare. Emily D’Angelo, for whom Tesori wrote this role and who “doesn’t stop singing for virtually the entire 100-minute span of the piece” (New York Magazine), portrays Jess, an F-16 fighter pilot whose unplanned pregnancy forces her into a new assignment, operating a Reaper drone in Afghanistan from a trailer in Nevada. As she adjusts to this new way of doing battle, she struggles under the pressure to be the perfect soldier, the perfect wife, and the perfect mother all at the same time.
