🌊 Last Week: A Better Tomorrow — Solo Exhibition by Working Hard One weekend left. One corner of the exhibition stages a scene of departure: a burst-open suitcase, a bicycle pulled from the sea, slippers, a blanket, a styrofoam box. Under current regulations, most migrant workers can remain in Taiwan for a cumulative maximum of twelve years — and when that time is up, leaving is not a choice. Deep-sea voyages can last six months, a year, sometimes longer before a boat returns to shore. It is an industry shaped by farewell. People come and go, and some you meet only once. When the time comes to leave, luggage has its limits. Much of what couldn't be carried — or simply never got the chance to be — was taken in by Working Hard, or carefully preserved by field companions Wu Ting-Kuan and Lan Yu-Chen. As one of the fishermen who came to speak at the talk reflected, seeing the objects of their everyday labor treated as something precious and worth keeping made them stop and think — about the basic rights that come with being human, and about what it means to be seen. After the exhibition closes, these objects will move on again. Before they do, come in and spend some time with the things that were left behind 🌿 ˙✧˖°𓆝 展覽資訊 Exhibition Info 𓆞·。

🏠 A Glimpse Inside: A Better Tomorrow — Solo Exhibition by Working Hard The exhibition poster features a few empty chairs — the kind of plastic stacking chairs you find in hardware stores the world over. Pull one up, and you're part of the conversation. Step inside and chairs appear everywhere: a wooden chair from Pos Kampoa, stools fashioned from yellow oil buckets, plastic chairs painted black, and a large blue foam mat spread across the floor. Painted on the mat is a phrase drawn from a bench the artists once came across at the harbor, written in Javanese: "This chair is for us — the broke Javanese from Indramayu, Tegal, Cirebon, Pemalang, Brebes, and Batang (Kursi Khusus Wong Ora Due Duit)." Equal parts joke and declaration of belonging: here is where we're from, here is who we are, and here is where we sat. A chair is a place. 🎞️ A Glimpse Inside: A Better Tomorrow — Solo Exhibition by Working Hard On the glass panels of the exhibition space, the artists have sketched portraits of the fishermen they came to know — each one accompanied by a "dream list." Working Hard asked the fishermen: what are your dreams? The question caught them off guard. In all their time in Taiwan, almost no one had asked them that. They took the lists home, sat with the question overnight, and came back with their answers. It wasn't advocacy that drove this — just genuine curiosity about what these people wanted for themselves, beyond all the conversations about rights and policy and circumstance. Scattered throughout the space are empty Indonesian cigarette packs. Indonesia's Kretek cigarettes are known for their sweet filters and cloves, which are said to carry mild analgesic properties. Those casually left-behind packs feel like a quiet metaphor: somewhere between the rough seas and the drifting, there is always some small way of carrying on, not through resistance, but through acceptance, with a touch of sweetness. LEE KAN KYO: The Last CD • Time|2026.5.23 – 7.5; 8.1 – 8.16, 2-8pm, Wed to Sun *TheCube will be closed on June 19 (Dragon Boat Festival), and for a summer break from July 6-31. • Venue|TheCube Project Space • Artist|LEE KAN KYO • Curator|Yu Wei Through labour-intensive, hand-painted re-production, Lee Kan Kyo conducts a sustained practice of media archaeology into formats displaced by the streaming age. Following his 2023 exhibition LEE’S DVD, which reconstructed the culture of DVD burning, Lee now excavates the music CD of the 1990s — and in particular the 8 cm Mini CD single endemic to that era's peak: a small disc that made a brief appearance in Taiwan's record market, becoming a cherished relic for a generation of Japanese pop devotees. The exhibition title The Last CD carries a double meaning. Beyond its literal sense, the Japanese word saigo (最後) also implies saving the best, the most treasured, for last. Viewed through the fervent lens of fan devotion, the show reconsiders this once-futuristic digital format as both ruins and monument. Lee's practice combines imitation, adaptation, and aestheticized piracy. Animated by the principle that ‘to draw is to burn’, his hand-rendered re-productions restore an unexpected weight to the gleaming laser-etched disc — whether Michael Jackson's Dangerous or Mariah Carey's perennial Christmas record. The Gongguan neighbourhood where TheCube is located has long been a gathering point for record shops, carrying the accumulated musical memories of generations. Against this backdrop, The Last CD invites us to reimagine both the material relics and the lingering ghosts of 1990s CD culture. (To draw is to burn)的技術拼接,為閃亮的雷射刻寫賦予了一種新的意義,不管是Michael Jackson的經典專輯《Dangerous》,或是Mariah Carey的聖誕金曲。

📣 Talk Recap: A Better Tomorrow — Public Program (2) Taiwan ABK: Drifting with Style or Drifting in Exile On April 26th, Wu Ting-Kuan, Lan Yu-Chen, and Working Hard gathered at TheCube for the exhibition's second talk 🌿 The afternoon opened with footage from a welfare gathering at Yenpu, where fisherman Ang Wang performed a song for brothers who spend months at sea. Wu Ting-Kuan described those years as a turning point — fishermen were beginning to see their basic needs as a public concern, not a private burden. Two fishermen also joined: Rofiq in person from Donggang, Santosa by video call. They spoke of the prayer room built from a donated container, typhoon days spent cooking together, and the pull of returning to shore. For Santosa, Kampoa was simply home. Reflecting on years of fieldwork, Ting-Kuan and Yu-Chen spoke of the fishermen's shifting sense of their own situation — oscillating between deference and self-assertion. Yu-Chen saw it not as weakness, but as something deeply human. Thank you to everyone who came 🙏 The exhibition runs through May 17 — come in anytime.

📣 This Weekend: A Better Tomorrow — Public Program (2) In the exhibition, a CRT television surrounded by packed belongings and relocated odds and ends plays footage of life and work at sea, footage entrusted to the artists by Santosa, a veteran Indonesian fisherman. Over the years, he documented many faces of the Kampoa community through his lens, including the process of its demolition. When he learned that Working Hard were bringing A Better Tomorrow back to Taipei, he said: "When Kampoa was torn down, you were still in Germany. But my files have recorded every moment. Take them and share them, let more people know what happened here." It calls to mind a question that has surfaced repeatedly in conversations between Wu Ting-Kuan and Santosa: "Can ordinary people make history?" Beyond providing for the material and spiritual needs of those living far from home, was Kampoa also a place where a community came into its own? More stories from the field await this Sunday's talk. 🎞️ 影像:嘟嚕影像 @dulub_studio

🏠 A Glimpse Inside: A Better Tomorrow — Solo Exhibition by Working Hard Following the artists' senses into harbor-side memories from the equator "...The air carried the scent of clove cigarettes, mingling with the salt of the sea breeze and the sharpness of spices... Turning into a narrow lane, we arrived at a residential building, its entrance framed by a red-and-white flag and its walls painted with a sailor's anchor and rope... pairs of wet feet crossing artificial grass..." - Working Hard, recalling their first visit to FOSPI. More than observation, it was a recalibration of the senses. The artists bring the everyday spaces hidden at the edges of Taiwan's cities into the gallery: a yellow bucket once used for engine oil, repurposed for daily life; a float ball cut open and turned into a communal savings box; a hammock strung between trees from discarded fishing nets; a wooden board reading "ORGANISASI KAMPOA," turning an open space into a place that belonged to someone. Each object is a clue, not just a remnant of harbor life, but evidence of an understanding that grew out of scarcity: about sharing, about looking out for one another, about making a life far from home.

📣 Upcoming Event: A Better Tomorrow — Public Program (2) Taiwan ABK (Anak Buah Kapal): Drifting with Style or Drifting in Exile The second talk of the exhibition takes place on April 26 (Sun) at 16:00 🌿 We welcome Wu Ting-Kuan (Sima) and Lan Yu-Chen, two authors of Nyanyian di Perantauan — a field research publication documenting Indonesian migrant workers' musical practices, social networks, and cultural lives in Taiwan. Their long-term fieldwork in Donggang and surrounding communities has formed the intellectual and emotional foundation upon which this exhibition is built. Among the scenes they documented: a performance by an Indonesian fishermen's band at a Donggang Independence Day celebration, fronted by Ang Wang, a veteran fisherman whom Working Hard have known for years and who lends his voice to A Better Tomorrow. In this talk, Ting-Kuan and Yu-Chen will speak from the perspective of early field companions to Working Hard's research — sharing how they entered the community, and how fieldwork and advocacy brought them to understand the lived conditions of those navigating life far from home.

🏠 A Glimpse Inside: A Better Tomorrow — Solo Exhibition by Working Hard Step inside and you'll find a reconstructed Pos Kampoa, the gathering place that Indonesian fishermen once built for themselves along the harbors of southern Taiwan. The exhibition rewards a slow look. Among the objects on view are baskets woven by hand from tuna fishing line, a pastime on deep-sea vessels and a practical essential on shore: a bag to carry your toiletries to shower. Working Hard also learned to weave from the fishermen, and their own baskets sit alongside. Many other objects and personal belongings arrived here through various forms of leaving: relocations, demolitions, contracts ending, people losing touch. What these objects carry is a way of life that existed at Pos Kampoa. Running your own electricity, collecting your own water, gathering after shifts to barbecue and sing, looking out for one another. After Pos Kampoa was demolished, that way of life faded. Today's harbor may have better facilities, but the texture of shared life has quietly disappeared. The exhibition runs through May 17. Come in, spend an afternoon, let the sound of waves wash over you, and trace the lives once lived through the objects that remain 🌿 ˙✧˖°𓆝 展覽資訊 Exhibition Info 𓆞·。
