The Watts Shared Safety Initiative (WSSI) is transforming the Watts community through collaborative efforts to reduce violence and heal trauma. By bringing together residents, community leaders, and organizations, WSSI addresses the root causes of violence, offering alternatives to traditional policing and fostering a sense of security and well-being throughout the neighborhood. This initiative is supported by long-standing partners like The Reverence Project (@thereverenceproject ), The Watts Gang Task Force (wgtf2006 ), We Care Outreach Ministries (@wecareoutreachmin ), Build Plus Community Marketplace, and The BUILD Program (P.C.I.T.I.) (@thebuildprogram ). With the backing of the Mayor's Office, Councilmembers, and Councilman McOsker, WSSI is paving the way for safer streets and brighter futures. Watch the full video to see how WSSI is making a difference in their communities. 🎥: @4thFlr #Watts #CommunityHealing #ViolencePrevention #PublicSafety #WSSI #InterventionTraining #CommunityPartners #losangeles #CVI #publichealth

⏮️ FLASHBACK FRIDAY "People are always looking for somebody to inspire, and those are the people who talk the truth." Throwback to voices from the field on what BUILD-PCITI represents. "Aquil was able to take the most notorious gang members in LA and bring them right here to this building. What this program does is save lives. It creates an environment where the community can be involved in their own destiny." This training professionalizes the work, but it also teaches community ownership, community advocacy, community empowerment. "The work that we do doesn't belong to us. It belongs to the community, and we are just tools that are used to set the pace." That's the foundation Dr. Basheer built. That's what BUILD-PCITI still stands for. The mission continues. 👊🏽 #ThrowbackThursday #Losangeles #BUILDProgram #PCITI #cbps #DrAquilBasheer #CVI #publichealth #certfiedtraining 📞 800-926-2155 🔗 buildprogram.org

🧠 MINDSET MONDAY "Correct each other in private, defend each other in public!" — Dr. Aquil Basheer The Commander on loyalty and accountability. When your team makes a mistake, you handle it behind closed doors. You correct where it needs to be corrected, not where it embarrasses or undermines. But when someone outside the circle comes at your people, when the work is questioned—you stand together. You defend publicly, you hold the line, you show unity. That's not covering for people, that's how you build trust. That's how you maintain discipline without tearing each other down. That's how strong teams operate. Correct each other in private, defend each other in public. That's the mindset 💪🏽👊🏽 #MindsetMonday #DrAquilBasheer #PCITI #BUILDProgram #Brotherhood 📞 800-926-2155 🔗 buildprogram.org

Production has started on @everydayheroes_la mural to honor the life and legacy of internationally respected interventionist and peace builder Dr. Aquil Basheer. @gaknew @findacan_app has captured his spirit 100%. The mural is going up at The Stentorian building on Vernon in South Central Los Angeles @thebuildprogram - HQ to The Build Program, Maximum Force Enterprises and Professional Community Intervention Training Institute (P.C.I.T.I.), all opportunities that Aquil initiated. So many of us were lucky to have been trained by Aquil - known as our “COMMANDER” - through the Professional Community Intervention Training Institute (P.C.I.T.I.) Aquil @aquilbasheer3 was a steadfast champion for all oppressed people and stood by everyone who is struggling to build safer and more just communities. He trained thousands of us to respond to local crises, interrupt violence, stop deadly rumors and prevent retaliation - all while healing hearts and transforming thinking. We hope to cover all Watts and SCLA with art. Please all writers, DM us. 🎤 TESTIMONIAL THURSDAY "10 out of 10. 10 stars." — Franklin Emmanuel Peterson IV from Street Outreach Network Franklin completed PCITI Level 1 training in Montgomery County and walked away with tools to strengthen the entire field. What he learned: → Recognizing strengths and weaknesses to position people effectively. → Situational awareness and trauma-informed practice. → Balancing the militant approach with the softer approach—meeting people where they are. "A lot of this conflict we de-escalate comes from a place of trauma. There is the militant approach that keeps us safe, but there is also that softer approach to be trauma-informed and welcoming." His takeaway: "The more of us that have this type of knowledge, the stronger the work as a whole becomes." Franklin also said: "Blessed to be under the tutelage of Dr. Basheer. His legacy lives on." Big salute to Franklin, Street Outreach Network, and all the participating warriors from Montgomery County for putting in the work. 🫡 #Testimonial #PCITI #BUILDProgram #StreetOutreachNetwork #publicsafety #MontgomeryCounty #CVI #DrAquilBasheer 📞 800-926-2155 🔗 buildprogram.org

Warriors, let's get back to the basics. Dr. Aquil Basheer didn't leave us guessing about what this work requires. He laid it out in PCITI Skill Set Development Manual 1—the terms that started this work and helped shape BUILD-PCITI. Acronyms, frameworks, protocols—all of it built from the field, for the field. We pulled 5 of them for you in this carousel. These are tools you should know if you're doing this work seriously. Swipe through → Take notes →Train your team. A.S.K. 🧠 MINDSET MONDAY The Commander on priority and collaboration. "We have got to put the bigger objective of community survival over everything else that comes to the plate." Community survival. That's the bigger objective. Not your organization, not your ego, not your program → community survival. "We really cannot stay in our silos to get this work done. We have got to unify, we have got to link." The mindset shift: Stop protecting your territory. Start prioritizing the community. Whatever your expertise is, whatever your role is—find someone, find an organization, where when you bring your skills to the table, you achieve a better result together. Put community survival over everything else. That's the challenge and the mindset needed to carry forward. From Dr. Basheer's talk at UC Santa Cruz on "Peace in the Hood." 📖 Book available on Amazon. 🎥 Video courtesy of UC Santa Cruz. The work continues. 🖤 #MindsetMonday #DrAquilBasheer #PCITI #BUILDProgram #PeaceInTheHood 📞 800-926-2155 🔗 buildprogram.org
