In 1992, something unprecedented happened in Los Angeles: rival gang members negotiated a historic peace treaty, significantly reducing violence across the city. Audacious 2024 grantee @aqeelasherrills , one of the key negotiators of that treaty, is continuing to bring his vision of community-led peace programs to cities across the US through @safeandjustusa and @cbps_collective ’s new initiative, Scaling Safety—empowering trusted local leaders to redefine public safety and create lasting change from the inside out. The Community Based Public Safety Collective: Discovering Our Vital Roles ✨🫱🏽‍🫲🏾 📹 In this video, we unveil the heart of CBPS Collective and what we stand for. When we think about addressing violence within our communities, our minds often turn to law enforcement. But here's the truth: "You can't have public safety without the public." To truly make a difference, we must work with those within the community. At its core, CBPS Collective is about investing in black and brown leadership in communities impacted by violence across the country. These leaders have long been under-resourced and deserve our support. Our dedicated team members discuss our mediation process and guide individuals in creating a culture of peace within neighborhoods. We actively seek out organizations in need and provide the funding they require. We're here to do the work, to help people save lives, and to empower leaders within the community. Public safety, to us, means fostering a presence of well-being to support victims and survivors. 🤍 With the funding we provide, communities can hire new members, build infrastructure, and scale their programs. Join us as we share our stories and insights that showcase our commitment to building capacity and strengthening communities. Family, we are creating a new approach to safety-- one that recognizes the vital role of community leadership. Join the movement, and let's make our communities safer and more resilient. 🤲🏽 📹: 4thFLR #CommunitySafety #CBPS #Empowerment #tta #InvestingInLeadership #ViolenceIntervention #PublicHealth #cvi #publicsafety #communityintervention #endgunviolence #CommunitySafety #blackandbrownunity #nonprofitlife #grants

The Watts Shared Safety Initiative (WSSI) is transforming the Watts community through collaborative efforts to reduce violence and heal trauma. By bringing together residents, community leaders, and organizations, WSSI addresses the root causes of violence, offering alternatives to traditional policing and fostering a sense of security and well-being throughout the neighborhood. This initiative is supported by long-standing partners like The Reverence Project (@thereverenceproject ), The Watts Gang Task Force (wgtf2006 ), We Care Outreach Ministries (@wecareoutreachmin ), Build Plus Community Marketplace, and The BUILD Program (P.C.I.T.I.) (@thebuildprogram ). With the backing of the Mayor's Office, Councilmembers, and Councilman McOsker, WSSI is paving the way for safer streets and brighter futures. Right now, leaders, practitioners, organizers, and community members from across the country are gathering for our inaugural Community Safety: THE BLUEPRINT Symposium. Today is about more than conversation. It’s about sharing what works. It’s about strengthening strategy. It’s about building safer communities through trust, intervention, accountability, and community leadership. Across this room are people doing the work every single day: preventing violence, supporting healing, responding to crisis, and building systems rooted in care and prevention. This symposium is creating space for collaboration, learning, and action centered around Community-Based Public Safety. The work is happening. The conversations are happening. And the movement continues to grow. This is THE BLUEPRINT. Stay connected with us throughout the day as we continue highlighting the voices, strategies, and people shaping the future of public safety. #TheBlueprint #CommunitySafetyBlueprint #CommunityBasedPublicSafety #PublicSafetyInPublicHands #TheCollective

This work is personal. There is no off switch for frontline practitioners. They carry: • The weight of conflict • The responsibility of intervention • The trust of their community They show up after a loss. They step in before harm. They stay when others leave. This is not just a job. It is a commitment to community. When we talk about Community-Based Public Safety, we are talking about people who choose, every day, to stand in the gap. #HonorTheWork #CommunityBasedPublicSafety #TheBlueprint #CommunityBasedPublicSafety #CommunitySafetyBlueprint

This work is not a theory. It is proven. In Newark, New Jersey, violence reached a 60-year low. That didn’t happen by chance. Frontline practitioners, working through community-based strategies, played a critical role. The evaluation by the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs confirms it. This is what happens when: • Skilled practitioners lead • Communities are engaged • Systems support the work Community-Based Public Safety is not an alternative. It is a necessary part of what works. #ProvenSolutions #CommunityBasedPublicSafety #TheBlueprint #PublicSafety #publicsafetymatters

Safety can not be built on unstable ground. We expect frontline practitioners to save lives. But we often fund the work as if it’s temporary. •Short-term grants. •Inconsistent support. •Unstable infrastructure. AND STILL, THEY DELIVER! In communities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Newark, sustained investment helped create the conditions for real outcomes. If we want results, we have to fund: • The people doing the work • The time it takes to build trust • The systems that support consistency Community-Based Public Safety works. But only when we treat it like essential infrastructure. #InvestInCommunity #CommunityBasedPublicSafety #TheBlueprint #PublicSafety #TheCollective

If you care about what actually works, this is your moment. Community-Based Public Safety is not a theory. It is happening right now in communities across the country. And the results speak for themselves. We have the proof. We have the practitioners. We have the models. Now we need alignment, investment, and action. Community Safety: THE BLUEPRINT is bringing together frontline practitioners, community leaders, organizers, researchers, and decision-makers to move the field forward. This is where practice meets strategy. This is where real conversations happen. This is where the future of public safety is being shaped. 📍 Newport News, Virginia 🗓️ May 14, 2026 Join us. What does this work actually look like day to day? Let’s be clear. Community-Based Public Safety is not abstract. It looks like: • A practitioner stepping into a conflict before it escalates • A trusted messenger checking in on someone at risk • A team responding in real time to prevent retaliation Teams like the @newark_community_street_team do this work every day. The evaluation shows this is not informal work. It is structured, skilled, and directly tied to reductions in violence. This is what real public safety looks like on the ground. #TrustedMessengers #CommunityBasedPublicSafety #TheBlueprint #PublicSafety #TheCollective

Most people don’t understand what actually keeps communities safe. It’s not just policy. It’s not just systems. It’s people. Every day, frontline practitioners are: • Mediating conflict before it turns deadly • Responding in moments of crisis • Building trust where systems alone cannot This work is not theoretical. In Newark, New Jersey, Community-Based Public Safety strategies helped contribute to historic reductions in violence — and independent research from the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs confirms what communities have known for years: When communities lead safety, outcomes change. This is what real public safety looks like: ✔️ Intervention before violence happens ✔️ Trusted relationships ✔️ Consistent community presence ✔️ People invested in protecting their neighborhoods Community-Based Public Safety is not an alternative. It is essential infrastructure for safer, stronger communities. We’re building a future rooted in prevention, trust, accountability, and healing — and we want you connected to the work. 🔗 Visit cbpscollective.org to learn more, partner with us, attend upcoming events, and stay connected. #PublicSafetyInPublicHands #CommunityBasedPublicSafety #TheBlueprint #PublicSafety #TheCollective
