I LOVE NATIVE FASHION AND THE WHOLE WORLD SHOULD TOO 💫 🪶 🌎 . This @swaianativefashion fashion week was smaller, intimate, giving me time to think about how much I love Native Fashion and how I want the elegance and craftsmanship to be seen. We have Native Couturiers and always have been. 💅 For this show I wanted to do platforms/risers that uplift the looks but also have the designs engage with the crowd giving viewers the ultimate access to all the fine details. I was inspired by the old way that fashion houses would showcase their designs for purchasing but I also wanted the energy from the show to feel like you were watching something for the first time. I’m also inspired by the crazy range of talent we have in Indian country from Acoma pueblo opera singer @obshimmin , violinist Aspyn and singer @tianaanpowin_st Getting asked to produce is always an honor and as I design/create runway layouts, it takes a team to put it together. I’d like to thank my assistant/protege @indiesunshinebby who flew out from CA to help me, Model Manager @odo.ishkiin , my best friend @ch.la.homma & Isaac, the Heritage hotel team, @swaianativefashion @santafeindianmarket team, Photo/Video team and to my favorite collaborator @emiraine & @jgnatworth for coming in and capturing Native fashion through bad ass portraits! Most importantly I’d love to thank the models and Hair Stylists & Makeup Artists for contributing their creativity and talent to bring the designer’s looks to life. Also thank you to the Native Designers/Creatives who came out to participate in our vendor market! I saw so much beauty when I got a second to walk around! This is the last show I’m producing for awhile as I have to produce my next collection, a short film, my wedding, and give love to all the other projects I have on my plate! Even in a bastion of creativity like Santa Fe, Peshawn Bread (Comanche/Kiowa/Cherokee) stands out. “Clothing keeps me warm and alive,” Bread says, while wearing a yellow-and-black-plaid, fuzzy duster; leather-and-rabbit-fur Manitobah boots; and a black clutch covered with metal spikes. “Fashion keeps me sane.” With an ever-growing repertoire of creative roles—runway star, filmmaker, cultural adviser, and campaign model for brands like Levi’s and Ralph Lauren—Bread is helping lead this month’s third annual Southwestern Association for Indian Arts Native Fashion Week, co-producing the Santa Fe show and presenting their jewelry and fashion label, House of Sutai. A Sundance Institute alum, they’ve advised on major productions, including the Disney+ miniseries Echo and the Prime sci-fi Western Outer Range. “I was the weird kid in school,” says Bread, who left Oklahoma for Santa Fe as a teenager. “I was gay. Being the muse for "Coyote Girl" was an intimate, visceral experience—bringing our collective memory into a contemporary context.
