Gentle Carnatic strains of MS Subbulakshmi’s raga bowli filter through the 200-year-old windows of a Kerala home by the local temple in a quaint neighbourhood in Thrissur. Sourced from Karaikudi, these antique windows allow a glimpse inside the nalukettu (a traditional Kerala home built around a courtyard), designed according to the principles of Thachu Shastra (Vastu). Bright colours and warm yellow lights peek through the verandah that wraps around the airy bungalow, shaded by a pitched roof. The 5,000-square-foot home was designed for a family of five: the client and her husband (both finance professionals from the Middle East), their son, and her elderly parents. It was built on a plot of land the homeowner inherited from her father and was fulfilled by Meera Pyarelal, founder of interior design studio Temple Town. Featured by Architectural Digest India. The Philosophy: Why “Heirloom Modernism”? The design ethos for Coromandel Court was born from a specific tension in the clients’ lives: the duality of high-velocity global careers versus the desire for a slow, culturally rooted home life. 📸 - @atulpratapchauhann

Coromandel Court: A South Indian Heirloom for a Global Family Coromandel Court, a sprawling 12,000-square-foot residence in Bangalore, stands as a testament to the lives of its owners, one of our favourite clients. Two C suite executives of billion dollar companies. Together, they envisioned a home that reflects their South Indian heritage while embracing the European influences absorbed through a lifetime of travel—a true reflection of modern India: rooted, worldly, and richly layered. 📸 - @atulpratapchauhann

Repost @elledecorindia ・・・ A sunken conversation pit, the balcony with a wooden swing, temple-like coffered ceilings in the pooja room, the stone and brass that anchor it in a distinctly southern design language. Coromandel Court in Bengaluru, designed by Temple Town @temple.town is rooted in the idea of a home that preserves culture and breathes life into them. The foyer with its semi-precious stone inlay empties into a double-height living room where a sunken conversation pit ties the whole space together. It’s hemmed by a deep green panelled wall with a desk that emits academia, a formal living area perched with a blue sofa and finally the dining area across that brings a rather royal touch to every meal devoured. There’s cultural fluency in the form of Kalighat and Pichwai paintings that sprawl around the home alongside artefacts gathered from across the country. The owners’ belief in passing down their inheritance stands strong within this home. The Dravidian architecture especially comes to life in the pooja room that hoists itself with a coffered red ceiling and a brass-lit marble altar creating a space reminiscent of a typical temple that you’ve seen before. The bedrooms feature four-poster beds, warm wooden ceilings with exposed beams and iconic artworks like Raja Ravi Verma’s Radha in the Moonlight that are integrated into its design. The children’s room is inspired by Channapatna toys, threaded through brass elements and a bright colour palette. The guest bedroom with its Chennai-inspired embroidery, carries its own identity. And then there are the in-between spaces: the theatre room wrapped in deep greens and browns, and the verandah with a wooden swing and a hand-drawn mural. Coromandel Court is doused in culture at every nook and sustains the otherwise inevitably forgotten details of its owners’ lives. Coromandel Court: Heirloom Modernism for a Global Family 🏛️✨ In Bangalore, a 12,000-sq.-ft. sanctuary stands at the intersection of high-velocity global careers and a deep desire for a slow, rooted life. Designed for two C-suite executives, Coromandel Court is a "future antique"—a dialogue between South Indian soul and contemporary precision. The Walkthrough: The Heart: A 20ft-high foyer with semi-precious stone leads to a dramatic 3ft-deep sunken conversation pit, blurring the lines into an outdoor gazebo. The Dining: A teakwood gate-legged table paired with chairs in Ritu Kumar fabrics—a nod to India’s textile legacy. The Modernity: A bold blue high-performance kitchen and a 15-seater home theatre with plaid acoustic walls. The Sanctuary: A temple-inspired Pooja room sits at the core, echoing timeless architecture. The Play: A whimsical children’s room featuring a brass-and-Channapatna-toy divider. The Pièce de Résistance: The principal suite, where a Raja Ravi Varma Radha in the Moonlight is seamlessly integrated into the wardrobe panels—transforming daily utility into a private gallery. Rooted, worldly, and richly layered. This is heritage not just preserved, but lived. //In the quiet outskirts of Kochi, within a gated enclave wrapped in Kerala’s dense greenery, stands this house. Conceived as a holiday retreat for a young family of three based in the United States, the home is an intimate exploration of exposed brick architecture and material honesty. It is not merely a residence but an immersive experience shaped by earth, craft, and cultural memory. . . The Terracotta Sanctuary in Kochi, India designed by @temple.town by @meerapyarelal . . Naturalism defines the architectural language in this project. Terracotta tiles, exposed brick, cool cement floors, lime plastered walls, solid wood, and woven cane come together in a palette that feels grounded and tactile. The textures are intentionally left honest and expressive. Earthy hues and raw finishes anchor the house in its context, constantly reminding its inhabitants of their connection to the land. . . Art and culture permeate the home. A cozy home theatre invites intimate gatherings, while a sunlit study allows space for painting and creative reflection. Every corner reveals the family’s deep affection for Indian heritage and craftsmanship. Even the staircase becomes a narrative element. Black and white Athangudi tiles line the risers, creating a rhythmic ascent. At the landing, a commanding Theyyam artwork introduces a spiritual dimension, grounding the home in Kerala’s cultural ethos. Check it out!! . . 📸 @justin_sebastian_photography . //DE January-February 2026 //This edition explores the many currents shaping design today, with a special focus on colour, perhaps the most emotional tool in a designer’s vocabulary. . . We look closely at @asianpaints colour of the year 2026, and how this defining shade ‘Moonlit Silk’ may influence interiors, objects, and artistic expression in the months to come. . . Our journey travels outward to the snow-laden landscapes of the Swiss Alps, where collectible design takes centre stage at NOMAD St. Moritz @nomadcircle , proving that craftsmanship and context can coexist beautifully. And as anticipation builds for the largest design global gathering, @isaloniofficial we talk with Maria Porro, about the upcoming design fair. . . On Cover, a bamboo & concrete cocoon by @lythdesign in Sonipat reimagines the idea of a sustainable food street as an ecological dialogue between nature and structure. . . +also featuring: @basics_arch @ikigaistudio.in @quirkstudio @temple.town @anthillaa_architectz @hilifefurnishers @saritahanda @orangetreehomes @grey_weave @scultdesignlab @tis_insidestories @tvashtaarchitects_interiors . .
