Patrice gets a standing ovation at 0:55 on this video after our Emmy win! We’re still in awe. Patrice’s speech, and the category were cut from the broadcast but we’re hoping this moment will live forever online and in our hearts. We will never forget it. In all of these years making the film, it always felt like Patrice was meant to be in front of the world, and now it’s happening. Patrice may be an iconic queen but her story is not unique. As she says in her speech there are millions of other disabled people who are also struggling to survive right now especially after the massive cuts to Medicaid. It was surreal to see people like Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, Rory Albanese, Will Ferrel, Bill Hader, Ali Wong, Ru Paul, and so many others in the room stand and applaud for her. However, this Emmy award only symbolizes a small percentage of the recognition that Patrice and the disability community deserve for surviving in a world that was not built for them. Until then, talk about the cuts to Medicaid. Amplify disabled stories. Hire disabled people. PAY disabled people. We will have to take care of each other if we’re going to make it. We want to thank the advocates who do so much for disability rights and have worked generously alongside us: DREDF, Help Hope Live, Caring Across Generations, FWD-Doc, The Ford Foundation, ADvancing States, Special Olympics, and many others. Thank you to everyone who watched the film, shared your story and witnessed ours. We love you. @sarahkatesilverman @iamrealwillferrell @wilfredburr @aliwong @rupaulofficial @jimmykimmellive @roryalbanese @dredf1979 @caringacrossgen @fwddoc @specialolympics @advancingstates @fordfoundation @rebecca_a_cokley @helphopeliveorg @abcnewsstudios @hulu #patricethemovie #patricethemoviedocumentary #patricethemovieonhulu #abcnewsstudios #hulu #disabilityrights #handsoffmedicaid #medicaidmatters #disabledjoy #disabledresistance #patricethemovieonhulu #emmy #emmywinner #emmyawards #emmyawards2025

𝗢𝗖𝗧 𝟮𝟰 — 𝟮𝟲, join us for 𝗜𝗧’𝗦 𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗟, 𝗜𝗧’𝗦 𝗧𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗟: 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬-𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗗 𝗗𝗢𝗖𝗨𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗬 — a 3-day participatory workshop led by artist + educator 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗸 [ @instamateik ], whose fearless practice explores how small, tactical gestures can spark movements of solidarity and resistance. We’re thrilled to be joined by an incredible lineup of guest facilitators: Julie Wyman [ @julieforrestwyman ], DeeDee Halleck [ @deedeehalleck ] and Ted Passon [ @tedpasson ]! Together, we’ll examine how bodies, images, and media intersect in spaces of protest and collaboration: How does inhabiting historical images shift their meaning? What happens when we touch and handle the materials of resistance? How can we reclaim media-making in spaces built to exclude? Through hands-on exercises, reenactments, and collective strategy-sharing, this workshop invites participants to build coalitions across overlapping struggles, and to imagine how our bodies themselves become sites of resistance, connection, and joy. PATRICE: The Movie won the Emmy Award for “Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking”. Patrice delivered the acceptance speech and was given a standing ovation by the entire audience. We were moved by all the love in the room and couldn’t wait to share this moment with all of you! Here is the text of her speech: “I am Patrice from Patrice: The Movie. We made this movie as a love letter to all the disabled people like us who can’t get married or even live with their partner without losing their Medicaid benefits which they need in order to survive.  To qualify for Medicaid you also have to live on less than $2,000 a month, and it’s really hard to survive below the poverty line. And now that Medicaid was cut by $1trillion to pay for tax cuts for billionaires, we want to accept this award on behalf of all the millions of disabled people and low income people like us who are going to lose their healthcare.  We love you and we see you and we’re scared just like you. We hope one day soon the government will take better care of those of us who don’t have anything than those of us who have everything. Until then we’ll have to take care of each other.”

#cnklappenlesen: @patricethemovie , directed and co-produced by @tedpasson , was the first film to receive the newly established „all inclusive Award“ at @dokfest Munich, the world’s first honor of its kind, and it is now nominated for an Emmy. The documentary tells the powerful story of Patrice Jetter and Garry Wickham, who are fighting relentlessly for their rights and love. Without giving too much away: if they were to marry, they would lose access to the healthcare program that provides the medication they rely on to survive. After the film was released President Joe Biden invited the remarkable, loving couple to the White House in 2024 to help challenge this paradoxical law. This summer, Patrice and Garry returned to Washington, this time to advocate not only for their own future but for the very existence of the healthcare program itself. In this interview, we speak with director Ted Passon about the making of the film, its political resonance, the history of disability rights in the United States, and the challenges faced during production. PATRICE: THE MOVIE won the Emmy Award for “Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking” on the exact one year anniversary of our premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and the four year anniversary of our first shoot! I’m so grateful for what this team has given to make this film. It was only possible because of the talents of so many amazing people and their love for Patrice and Garry and Elizabeth. We all knew that Patrice belonged on the world stage. The other night she took to the Emmy stage and got one of only two standing ovations of the entire night. It was just stunning and very emotional. It was a moment I and I think all of us had imagined for years and it was actually happening! I will never forget it. I can’t wait for the world to hear Patrice’s speech on Saturday on the broadcast. I’m also so grateful that my mom got to be there too. She’s my hero. There were lots of people we wished could have been there especially our brilliant and beloved producer, script writer, and family member @bedroomactivist who was at her brother’s wedding. She is the beating heart of our team and she was in all of our hearts all night and always! We love you Kyla!❤️

We’re so honored to be listed as the predicted Emmy winner in our category by the illustrious Scott Feinberg from @hollywoodreporter ! Who knows what will happen at the @televisionacad Emmy Awards ceremony but the bode of confidence from him is more than appreciated!!! And it makes up for another website that said we only had a 1% chance of winning. 😂 Either way Patrice is hard at work on her outfit and Garry just got a tux and we’re going to have a really fun time!! The Emmys have been a great source of joy and excitement admist the horror and fear of Medicaid cuts that will leave millions of people like Patrice and Garry with no healthcare. These small moments of joy are so important these days! 👨‍🦽‍➡️💃🏽🎉🍾🪩🥳 #patricethemovie #patricethemoviedocumentary #allagesproductions #hulu #disabilityrights #disabledjoy #disabledjoyisresistance #disabledjoymatters Image Description: An image of a Hollywood Reporter article predicting Patrice: The Movie as the winner of the Emmy for “Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking”
