In many ways, Richard Stampton’s Phillip Island House is remarkably ordinary and familiar. It’s by articulating its everydayness that it’s able to cultivate some basic but especially valuable affordances of architecture – affordances that have been left behind in architectural culture. It’s also these that make it one of the most significant houses in contemporary Australian architecture. I wrote a short essay describing these qualities of the house, now published by @union.magazine and available to read online, with photographs by @arorygardiner and @url.cv @richardstamptonarchitect

Issue 15 of @thelocalproject features an article on @richardstamptonarchitects intriguing and evocative Yanakie House - it’s also available to read online. Some casual conversations with Richard late last year, about contemporary architecture and his work, eventually turned into a couple of pieces of writing on two of his recent houses - this is the first to be published. House for Three Generations (1,2), Cottage in the Mountains (3,4), and House of Relation (5) by @studio_meeli Three seemingly ordinary yet delightfully artful Korean houses, engulfed by everyday life. An exceptionally good trio. Thank you Mincheol and Mr Lee, both for taking us to see these and for the thought-provoking conversations around them 🙏

The new issue of @atlantis_magazine from @bk.tudelft features a triptych of photographs that I took about a decade ago, along with a short (more recent) piece of writing with reflections on the confluence of social, technological, financial, and regulatory processes within the banal corrugated steel fence. Very pleased to have been able to contribute to the investigations of ‘atopias’ in this issue of Atlantis.

Spring creek road farm house is, simply, an exceptionally good house. The ways that it stakes out space for architectural agency send it miles ahead of contemporary Australian residential architecture. Implied order within the loose composition of the Smithson’s Sugden House - leftovers from seminars on composition. The facade of the Smithson's Sugden House seems, at first glance, to be symmetrically ordered, yet bears unexpected compositional slippages. There is an apparently strong ordering of its facade elements. A square window sits stable and balanced, in the centre-bottom of the wall. This is, in turn, framed by another square, defined by the edges of the surrounding, almost mirrored, windows. In reality, the windows on the left side of the facade have slipped out from the boundaries of this framing square - as if the lower window has (for some reason) increased in width, and the upper window has shifted over to maintain the alignment of their outer edges. However, even so, the simplicity and strength of the facades implied order, and the clarity of the resulting figure, is strong enough to convey the initial impression of a symmetrical order. This composition - a loose approximation of an implied ordering - is perhaps, in the end, a more pleasing condition. That is, the implied, more rigorous ordering may feel too rigid, lifeless, or inappropriately formal for the decorum of this suburban dwelling. It also establishes a more harmonious dialogue with the side facades, which are picturesquely accidental in their composition of elements.

A selection of work from the first semester of @unfamiliar_routines led by @kuba_komarzynski and I, at Monash University. Projects began by editing 'typical', single-aspect Melbourne apartment plans, based on research into an assigned domestic practice (e.g. cooking, washing, sleeping). Through a series of iterations, these developed into four storey blocks of dual aspect apartments. Projects worked from the minutiae of everyday life outwards, accommodating the complexities of domestic life in subtle and elegant ways, and providing flexibility and diverse affordances, while being attuned to the scope of architectural agency and the latent potentials of domestic life. Very grateful to have such an engaged and thoughtful group of students. Clare Cousins Architects’ Fitzroy North Terrace is an exemplary contribution to the local streetscape - while also being particularly nice behind its enigmatic walls. Issue 152 of Houses features an article on the project, with some thoughts on nuanced and confident responses to heritage housing stock and the ways that alterations index historical changes in our domestic practices. @housesmagazine @clarecousins
