When I sit in quaker meeting I often imagine we are in a spaceship.
A while ago I searched for ‘science fiction books with quakers in’ and ended up reading ‘Dazzle of Day by Molly Gloss’ - it’s not an amazing book but it has some beautiful parts to it. It’s about ‘a quaker community that leaves an inhospitable Earth on a generation ship to settle a new planet’. I was disappointed by the book and dream of writing my own but it planted a seed.
I ran an intergenerational ‘Design a quaker generationship’ workshop at Central Manchester Friends Meeting House.
The main outcome of the workshop was actually the discussion, although the physical objects and drawings are great.
I shared with people my feelings of quakerism being scifi and we discussed how it will morph and adapt with us as the world changes.
In the workshop we imagined a potential future where quakers may need to go into space and of course we had lots of discussion about why we shouldn’t go into space and how we need to focus on Earth's issues first.
We spoke about how silence might be universally understood. And we designed peace mission spacecrafts. We also collaboratively made this giant generationship called ‘The Sense of the Meeting’
Felt really healing to lead 4 workshops with Art and Design students at Manchester College last week, since leaving their course myself in 2018. It was part of Manchester Art Gallery's brilliant programme Creative Futures where TMC students are set a brief and given an opportunity to exhibit in MAG for the last 10 years.
I spoke about my practice, and we did tasks based on anthropomorphism, psychogeography and pillows
