Do One returns to the much loved Whalley Range spot @carltonclubmcr for another Friday night May 15th party and we host much liked Manchester event ‘ Bakk Heia ‘ and it’s main DJ @bitzer.malo aka Bitzer Maloney alongside our residents @irfanrainy@goldenloungesoundsystem and @isaac__rb :)
Bakk Heia celebrates 10 years of parties very soon and usually takes place at Salford institution The White Hotel. Their music vibe takes in lots of left field electronic dance music and lots of psychedelia.
After the success of our recent @comesundayjazzbirmingham Sunday jazz session at @niamos_mcr we return for our usual 8pm - late session via our wholly unique Klipsch Hi Fi sound system.
Tickets are £8.50 on Skiddle ( link in bio ). And we are also introducing an early £5 b4 9pm entry so you can enjoy our early doors ‘ cosmic hour ‘ before the hard dancing session begins. See you on the dancefloor. #doone #whalleyrange #manchester #dj #hifi
New! From the Commission for New and Old Art.
This coming Bank Holiday Monday (4th May) our May Day concert at The Claremont returns, and this time it’s a special one. We will be marking the centenary of the 1926 General Strike.
Programme will include works by socialist composers including Ralph Vaughn Williams, Hanns Eisler, EH Meyer, Poulenc and a new work by Lawrence Dunn commissioned specially for the occasion.
Players, as ever, of the highest standard including two from the Hallé and one from the BBC Phil. My old friend and wonderful singer Ann Wilkes (who lives just down the road from the pub!) will be joining as soprano.
Entry free. Generously supported and made possible by the Workers Music Association, Unite NW Services, Unite at the Christie, Unite Social Action, Unison MMU, RMT Piccadilly South, the Whalley Range Labour Club, North West Pensioners Association and the Hulme Tenants Union.
If you miss it, or if Manchester is not easy to get to, the concert will be remounted the following Sunday (10th) at the Herald Chamber Concerts Series in Todmorden. Entry £15. Generously supported by the Calderdale Trades Council and Sakers Bakery.

New in from the Commission for New and Old Art
We’re thrilled to announce that this autumn Lucy Shelton, the legendary octogenarian soprano of the New Music, will be joining us from New York in Manchester and London.
She will be performing Schoenbergs masterwork, “Pierrot Lunaire”, the angst-ridden, angular song cycle that ushered in secular modernity.
Alongside that piece in the programme will be Fourteen Ways to Describe the Rain, by Schoenberg’s great pupil Hans Eisler, a piece that the communist composer wrote in honour of his great teacher. Last heard at our 2024 May Day Concert in the Claremont in Moss Side on an inappropriately sunny day (perhaps it will rain this time!).
Tickets are £20. Not to be missed!

Thanks @siobdonn for the beautiful poster.
In just under two weeks at @ad_england we will be putting on a benefit concert called The American Harpsichord and hosting visiting musicians and friends from New York City, @philemign0n@sbythewaters@sam.white87
We are raising money for our autumn project, where we will be bringing new music legend and one of the most significant vocalists of the 20th Century, Lucy Shelton, over to Britain to perform Schoenberg’s towering classic “Pierrot Lunaire”, alongside us remounting Eisler’s 14 Ways of Describing Rain. This will happen in London and Manchester. It’s taking a fair bit of funds to make that happen, so we are putting on this show in a week and a bit to help!
Entry to The American Harpsichord is free, donation encouraged. Hope folks can come!
