Meet the Choreographers of Sheltering!
Next up: Daniel Mateo with Brown Boys
“We are creators, we are movers, we are storytellers”
A descendant of the Gomeroi people of northeast NSW as well as the Tongan people from the Pacifika region, Daniel started with the company as a Russell Page Graduate in 2021 and was excited to grow as an artist and a storyteller. In 2024, Daniel presented a groundbreaking original dance film, Brown Boys, co-directed by Cass Mortimer Eipper, as part of Dance Clan and is looking forward to presenting this work on a national stage. Visually poetic and deeply personal, it delves into the experiences of young Indigenous men, exploring identity, belonging, and cultural connection.
Watch as Daniel, through his own poetry, portrays his journey as a Gamilaroi and Tongan man - blending dance, narrative, and cinematic artistry.
