Holding Ground brings together two dynamic works in sharp contrast – one grounded in place, the other in technology from the New Zealand Dance Company. Together, these works form a vivid counterpoint, inviting us to sit in the tension between motion and stillness, and find balance within it. A duet by Moss Te Ururangi Patterson - don't miss this incredible dance work at Nelson Arts Festival. Thursday 30th October at Theatre Royal Link in bio to book your tickets! Supported by our partners Avoca

@nzballet X @nzdanceco x @theartsnz Wrap Party! 🩰 Last night in Ōtautahi Christchurch, we brought some of our Kotahi supporters to meet the two 2020 Arts Foundation Laureates (@shaynepcarter & @mosspatterson ) behind the historic Home, Land and Sea. Guests were treated to chats about the very special collaboration between two dance companies, insights into the score and movement, and we shared a toast 🥂 with dancers from both companies after their 3 week season across Aotearoa. The bone pendant? @mosspatterson gifted each of the dancers something to remember this moment by. And the shell necklace above? Gifted by another Arts Laureate, @witi_ihimarera to @nzballet dancers when they made a ballet after his story, The Wedding in 2006. @shaynepcarter (@2020 Laureate) @mosspatterson (2020 Laureate & Director NZ Dance Company) @tykingwall (Artistic Director, RNZB) @jessicapalalagi (Director, The Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi)

“When we are making the work, I’m really interested in the connections that the dancers are making in the studio. That’s really important to me. That, I think, is why we’re here. We’re here to try and answer some questions around ‘can these two styles coexist? Are they a blueprint for the future of dance in New Zealand?’ I was asking the contemporary dancers and the ballet dancers to ask each other questions through movement and for us to, try to answer that question together.” - Choreographer Moss Te Ururangi Patterson Come and see dancers from The New Zealand Dance Company and Royal New Zealand Ballet share the stage for the first time ever, in Home, Land and Sea 🌊 Book your tickets through our link in bio 🔗 Wellington 24 – 26 July Auckland 31 July – 2 August Christchurch 8 – 9 August 🎥 Dan Harris

The last time we collaborated with Home, Land and Sea choreographer Moss Te Ururangi Patterson and composer Shayne P Carter was for Te Ao Mārama, as part of Lightscapes in 2023 ☀️ Moss said of the work, “I hope that audiences, when they see the work, will open their hearts to a new way of experiencing Te Ao Māori and be intrigued to see more. They’ll see difference and diverse elements coming together, something that they may not have experienced before.” We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Moss and Shayne for Home, Land and Sea, and bringing Te Ao Mārama back to the stage as part of DanceX in Australia Book your tickets for Home, Land and Sea through our link in bio now 🌊 🩰 The cast of Te Ao Mārama, led by Principal Joshua Guillemot-Rodgerson, Lightscapes, 2023 🎥 Dan Harris

Moss Te Ururangi Patterson lives in a state of creative motion – always evolving, always shifting, always in cycle. “There’s nothing static,” he says from Wellington, where the chief executive and artistic director of the New Zealand Dance Company has relocated to from Auckland to choreograph a bold new work for the Royal New Zealand Ballet. "I had to find a way to be fearless ... to have no blocks.” Home, Land and Sea is a response to Aotearoa’s complex history and our evolving national identity. It touches on the ideas of belonging and tūrangawaewae (a place to stand), and is set to a defiant, searing original score by Shayne P Carter. “All Kiwis have navigated to this land in their own way. Whether you just arrived yesterday on Air New Zealand, or you navigated here 1000 years ago. We’re still discovering and exploring what that means ‒ that we’re in [this] relationship with each other.” At the link in bio, the renowned Māori choreographer and artistic director talks to André Chumko about the groundbreaking collaboration - one that unites artists from the New Zealand Dance Company and the Royal New Zealand Ballet for a first-of-its-kind blended performance. 📝 @andrechumko 📸 @darkerartsnz 📰 @sundaymag

This October, the Royal New Zealand Ballet is proud to make our first appearance at DanceX - a bold, visionary festival celebrating the depth and diversity of dance across Australia and Aotearoa. The 2025 programme features fourteen leading companies and choreographers, including The Australian Ballet, West Australian Ballet, and Restless Dance Theatre. The Royal New Zealand Ballet will be performing Te Ao Mārama. Created for the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s 70th anniversary in 2023, Te Ao Mārama is a powerful work by Moss Te Ururangi Patterson. Inspired by haka and powered by the strength of the men of the RNZB, this is a striking and lasting addition to the RNZB’s repertoire. Te Ao Mārama shares the strong Māori culture that is celebrated in Aotearoa and it is a privilege to share it on the international stage for the first time in Australia. Book your tickets through our link in bio!
