On May 9, we gather to celebrate of the living, breathing spirit of the minimalist movement that was sparked in the middle of the last century and cared for lovingly by each successive generation. We’re grateful to @seatedovation and @minimalism.society for inviting us to showcase how practitioners here in the DMV are living within the tradition of minimalism for their upcoming 10th annual conference. Here we have three artists with highly individual approaches, all of whom pull on different threads within the overall tapestry. Turns out there’s many ways to pare back and make the listener’s head spin. We have @almalaprida playing her tromba marina, an instrument that forces the player to think in harmonics and negative space with its simplicity of design. @rachelbeetz will be performing the gasping “Gate” and slithering “Delay” from her recent OT album Tone Keepers, itself a bold declaration of the depth that can be found in restraint. And @talsounds will cradle us in the warmth of her synthesizers. The concert will take place at The Clarice at UMD, and is free and open to the public. Image by @dnorsen_design , fashioned after Sol LeWitt’s poster for the 1978 Kitchen gala featuring Laurie Anderson, Robert Ashley, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, and Steve Reich. We believe our scene is just as legendary as theirs.

Two clips from my set last week at @618.dc 🐍 I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do for this set, but I knew I wanted to improvise and that I didn’t want to use a lot of gear, so I brought my pedals and the multi/poly (mainly bc I hadn’t played out with it yet and sometimes it’s fun to add that extra little bit of unfamiliarity to improvising). I prepped a couple days before by making 4-5 groups of sounds I liked for “songs” and the rest was 🔮 Here are two of clips of those “songs.” Thanks for sharing these videos with me @jwilliger and @danieljevne ! 💕 and for @a_laura_borealis_ / @valentinabooking for putting on the show and @suz.pol.pod.blotz and @sealedcontainer for playing sick sets that I could dance to all night.

Me & my baby 🥹🥰💕 I am so lucky to have such an amazing mother as a role model. She truly gives me and my sister (and now our sons), the world. I hope to be just like her, because it’s the best feeling. Thank you, @flowers4faten , for being an incredible mom and teta! We love you! Happy Mother’s Day! 💐💕🥰

Secret Planet presents Fera with special guest TALsounds at Rhizome on Wednesday April 8! Maurice Louca’s Fera in quartet live formation brings an intricate, hypnotic energy to the stage with Maurice Louca on guitar and electronics, Ayman Asfour on violin, Dylan Greene on drums and percussion, and Luke Stewart on double bass, delivering the full rhythmic and dynamic range of his latest album, Fera, in a powerful live setting. 7pm ticket link in bio 👀 Maurice Louca is one of the most gifted, prolific, and adventurous figures in Egypt’s thriving experimental arts scene. His genre-defying music bridges psychedelic Egyptian shaabi, cosmic jazz, and improvisation. In his latest project Fera, hypnotic polyrhythms take the forefront for a trance-inducing experience that invites both movement and careful listening. Natalie Chami (TALsounds) is a Canadian-born Lebanese American musician and educator. Known for her work in drone, ambient, and improvisational music, she has cultivated a distinguished solo career over the past 15 years, crafting a distinctive blend of personal and transporting music. #fera #mauricelouca #aymanasfouir #dylangreene #lukestewart

October 11, 2025 at @blackcatdc for @blackeyesdischord Speaking In Tongues festival & record release. Always feels good to be playing shows with people I admire both musically and when it comes to humanity. Important! Also, this was my first time back on a stage after taking a 9 month break. I had a moment when I looked in the mirror right before going on stage and I laughed and said “oh hello I haven’t seen you in a while!” And felt totally coocoo. Shifting my identity to being a new mom was instinctual and like overpowering/ all encompassing in the first few months. It was my only purpose (while still doing the necessities of work, etc.) But by 6 months I think is when I started to realize oh snap I miss my old self, too. How do I merge old Natalie with new mom Natalie? I’m still figuring it out, with grace. It’s a huge life change and it’s beautiful! A philosophical shift, but also the physical shift post growing a whole new human… It’s a wild ride. I love it and all the emotions and exciting sleep deprived challenges it comes with. I also love seeing my peers navigate this part of life with me. Especially with my music friends. I realize oooh other parents always have had an underlying understanding of this with each other. But I dunno. Now I’m in it and I’m very curious how we navigate the merge… I feel like the answer is we just figure it out 🤪 Thank you to @grady182 for the photos!

Natalie and I celebrated our 3 year anniversary yesterday, and this little beauty is 9 months old today. Natalie also plays her first show in a while on Saturday, and we have all three of our birthdays coming up in the next three months, as well as the holidays and time with family near and far. Nice to have things to look forward to and things that are certain in uncertain times. Protect your neighbors. 🌈

It took us 6 hours to drive 150 miles, but we made it. Ocean City is dope. Good food, good vibes, lots of Jimmy Buffet types in Tommy Bahama. 🤙🏼 #oceancity
