🎬 How can documentary filmmaking recreate places that are no longer accessible while staying historically accurate, emotionally grounded, and ethically responsible to its subject matter? At this year’s Cannes Next Virtual Production program at @marchedufilm , Take 2 Studios will present the case study From Reality to Reconstruction: How Virtual Production Can Empower Documentary Filmmaking. Drawing from the making of the documentary From Paradise to Hell, directed by @stefanie_daubek and @jayraff , the presentation explores how VP techniques enabled the reconstruction of otherwise inaccessible environments in service of the film’s historical storytelling. On May 5, 1945, American soldiers liberated Mauthausen Concentration Camp.
Up until the end, Lionel was forced to work as a lumberjack, barely able to hold up physically. We were able to build a forest both physically and digitally and step into Lionel’s world, right before liberation. Closing his story with his deep connection to nature - especially trees - felt like a full circle moment. Leaving the camp and hell as our last reenacted scene. „Vom Paradies in die Hölle“ erzählt erstmals die außergewöhnliche Überlebensgeschichte des Lionel Romney, eines afro-karibischen Seemanns, der 1944 ins Konzentrationslager Mauthausen deportiert wurde. Jahrzehnte nach dem Krieg vertraute er seine Erlebnisse seiner Tochter Mary an. Ihre Spurensuche : von der Karibik über Italien bis nach Österreich. Danke an @stefanie_daubek & @jayraff für euren langen Atem dieses Projekt nach so vielen Jahren endlich on Screen zu bekommen und eure mutige Vision in großen Bildern zu denken obwohl das Budget sehr limitiert war. Ich durfte die Bildgestaltung für den Fiktionspart für dieses besondere Projekt übernehmen. Mit kleinem aber dafür sehr motiviertem Team @joelknickel.works , @filmlicht.at , @jakobneuhauser , @take2studios.at haben wir das Abenteuer gewagt. Ein sehr schöner Dreh wo das ganze Team hands on am Start war - sogar meine Tochter ❤️ Ich wünsche dem Film eine sehr gute Resonanz und Reise! After four years of Italian imprisonment, Lionel was registered in the concentration camp Mauthausen in June 1944, being certain he was not going to survive the horrors of the camp. The further we came to this step in production the more we knew of our responsibility to historically authentically portray Lionel’s story, with months of research in historical accuracy we rebuild parts of Mauthausen. Building the horrific stage both physically and virtually for our talented cast to step into a reality no one wishes to step into. With building the set for the train ride it became inevitable - we were heading towards hell. Everybody felt it. And with incredible team effort, the intersection of light and movement and the stunning cast work it started to feel drastically real.
