📣 Introducing the 2026 TAASCON X ECAASU theme: CURRENTS 🌊 “Currents” is inspired by our understanding of change. Migrant narratives moving across countries, evolving in diverse enclaves, and managing ever-changing political regimes exemplify the dynamism in Asian-American communities. “Currents” evokes the current political climate of fascism, fragmentation, and polarization. In the past year, affirmative action was overturned. Diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts have been under attack, international students have been tossed as casualties of political feuds, political messaging has turned to fear and intimidation to promote deportations, and much more. As we interrogate our experiences in relation to time, place, and space, we encourage attendees, speakers, and comrades to consider three key sub-themes for this conference: • Migration, as a direct reference to the physical wind and ocean currents that carry people across borders. • Headlines, for the onslaught of current events that we hear every day. • Resistance, for the times that we need to oppose what we see going on and advocate for our communities as movements, as allies, and as changemakers. Find out more through the links in our bios. We can’t wait for yall to join @taasconnc and @ecaasu on March 27-29 at Duke University where we can explore our connections to CURRENTS together.

We are excited to announce our third plenary session featuring @1882foundation ! Based in Washington, D.C., the 1882 Foundation seeks to broaden public awareness of the history and continuing significance of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. The organization advances this mission through three overlapping initiatives: an annual national symposium, oral history talk stories, and resource development and accessibility for educators and researchers. The blockbuster film, Sinners, introduced audiences to Chinese Americans living in the Mississippi Delta. But this is only one story of many about Asian Americans living in the South. From the Manila Men in Louisiana (1767) to soldiers in the Civil War to the Supreme Court case of Gong Lum v. Rice (1927), Asian Americans have long been part of the fabric of America. Small “Chinatowns” and compelling stories of Asian Americans are found from Missouri to Virginia and throughout the Deep South. During this plenary session, you will see how Asian Americans lead active roles in communities around the South. The 1882 Foundation will also be tabling at our networking fair. We encourage you to attend the session, engage with their work, and visit their table to learn more!

We are excited to announce our second plenary session, a roundtable of Asian American professors from UNC and Duke University about Asian American studies and movement in the South! Join us at our conference for a conversation that brings together scholarship, lived experience, and critical perspectives on migration, diaspora, and power. ◇ Dr. Heather Ruth Lee is a historian whose research examines how law, race, and business shape migration and everyday economic life. Her books integrate legal history, Asian American studies, food studies, and digital humanities to illuminate how marginalized actors navigate restrictive regimes. She also brings this work into the public sphere through collaborative digital projects and museum partnerships. (Source: https://history.unc.edu/person/heather-lee/) ◇ Dr. Marguerite Nguyen is an Associate Professor of English. Her research and teaching cover American literature, Asian American literature, Vietnamese diasporic studies, critical refugee studies, and ecocriticism and is supported by the Andrew Mellon Foundation, American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship, and National Humanities Center. (Source: https://scholars.duke.edu/person/marguerite.nguyen) ◇ Dr. Soham Patel is an interdisciplinary scholar and educator whose work focuses on radical migrant histories, with a particular emphasis on the South Asian diaspora. His writing has appeared in American Studies Journal, Asia Shorts (Association for Asian Studies), CounterPunch, Ethnic Studies Review, Jamhoor, Journal of Asian American Studies, and ReOrient: Journal of Critical Muslim Studies. (Source: https://americanstudies.unc.edu/soham-patel/) ◇ Dr. Calvin Ryan Cheung-Miaw is a historian of race who works at the intersection of intellectual history and social movement history. His current book project, Asian Americans and the Color-Line, uses the history of Asian American Studies to explore the rise and fall of Third Worldism within the United States. He’s at work on a project on radical Asian American activism. (Source: https://scholars.duke.edu/person/Calvin.Cheung-Miaw) Attend our conference to hear from all these amazing professors!
