During his lifetime, martial arts legend Bruce Lee fought to be seen as an emerging star during a period of Asian American exclusion both on and off the silverscreen. Author and cultural organizer Jeff Chang’s “Water Mirror Echo” is a remarkable biography of the famous movie star, who rose to fame amidst a landscape shaped by systemic discrimination and deep social division. By highlighting Lee’s upbringing and lasting impact, Chang depicts this cultural icon as a symbol of resilience tied to the historical movements shaping the fight for Asian American inclusion and visibility. Join us as in conversation with Jeff Chang as we explore the lasting impact of Bruce Lee and gain insight into how representation, identity, and cultural power shape Asian American history. Open Q&A and Book Signing will follow the initial event. **Use the link in bio to RSVP for the event and access more detailed information on event location and parking!** Schedule: 5:00pm | Introduction 5:20pm - 6:20pm | Book Conversation between Jeff Chang & Casey Philip Wong, Assistant Professor of Social Foundations of Education, GSU 6:20pm - 7:00pm | Audience Q&A 7:00pm-7:45pm | Book Signing* *Copies of Water Mirror Echo will be available for purchase at the event. We are excited to announce our third plenary session featuring @1882foundation ! Based in Washington, D.C., the 1882 Foundation seeks to broaden public awareness of the history and continuing significance of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. The organization advances this mission through three overlapping initiatives: an annual national symposium, oral history talk stories, and resource development and accessibility for educators and researchers. The blockbuster film, Sinners, introduced audiences to Chinese Americans living in the Mississippi Delta. But this is only one story of many about Asian Americans living in the South. From the Manila Men in Louisiana (1767) to soldiers in the Civil War to the Supreme Court case of Gong Lum v. Rice (1927), Asian Americans have long been part of the fabric of America. Small “Chinatowns” and compelling stories of Asian Americans are found from Missouri to Virginia and throughout the Deep South. During this plenary session, you will see how Asian Americans lead active roles in communities around the South. The 1882 Foundation will also be tabling at our networking fair. We encourage you to attend the session, engage with their work, and visit their table to learn more!

Due to unexpected circumstances, Helen Zia is no longer available as our Saturday keynote speaker. TAASCON x ECAASU is excited to announce that the 2026 Conference keynote speaker is Dr. Heidi Kim, professor and previously director of UNC-Chapel Hill's Asian American Center (AAC)! Heidi Kim is a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at UNC Chapel Hill, where she was the founding Director of the Asian American Center. She is also a past chair of the board of North Carolina Asian Americans Together, a 501©3 civic engagement nonprofit. Professor Kim's research and teaching ranges through 19th-21st century American literature, with specializations in the Japanese American incarceration of World War II, law and literature, performing arts, and the Cold War period. Her work can be seen and heard in podcasts, news commentary, and documentary film. For the Asian American Center, she co-led two demography projects and created community and campus programs. Currently, she is writing Asian American Literature: A Very Short Introduction for Oxford University Press’s well-known series and developing a new monograph on the history and culture of reparations in the United States.
