Today, on National Indigenous Languages Day, we pause to reflect on how language is not simply a tool for communication, but a deeper system for holding and sharing knowledge. Language goes beyond syntax and linguistics, it carries stories, teachings, relationships to land, and entire ways of knowing through oral tradition. When languages are lost, we risk losing knowledge, history, and connection that cannot always be written down or translated. SUS EDI comes together today to share a few phrases as a small step toward keeping language present and valued.

Today, March 31st, is International Transgender Day of Visibility. This day is intended to combat anti-trans discrimination by celebrating the lives and accomplishments of transgender and non-binary people. To contribute to this important day, SUS EDI reached out to trans and non-binary members of the community to get their perspectives on aspects of their identity, and this post showcases some of their answers. Happy Trans Day of Visibility! 🩵🩷🤍🏳️‍⚧️

As we mark the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, we are reminded that understanding begins with learning, listening, and challenging the assumptions we may not even realize we carry. For many who practice Islam in our community, this time also coincides with Ramadan, which is a sacred month of reflection, compassion, generosity, and spiritual growth. It is a time centered on values that resonate across cultures and traditions, such as gratitude and kindness. That is why today, we encourage everyone to reflect on how we can move beyond misconceptions, approach differences with curiosity and respect, and actively contribute to building communities where everyone is welcome.

🌿 EDI presents our last event of the year… a Heart Cedar Weaving Workshop 🌿 Join us for a special hands-on cultural arts workshop led by the talented Musqueam cedar weaver, Rita Kompst!
 📅 March 27 🕔 5:00–7:30 PM 📍 IKB 155 👥 30 participant capacity
💚 Participants will learn the basics of cedar weaving and create their own woven cedar heart during a guided two-hour workshop. Inside each heart, attendees will place a personal message before twining it closed with Rita’s naturally dyed wool — creating a meaningful keepsake from the experience.
🍽 Following the workshop, Indigenous dinner from Big City Bannock will be served, creating space for community, reflection, and connection.
🔗 RSVP through the link in our bio
🌈 All students are welcome to attend. A portion of seats are reserved to prioritize Indigenous students.

Phew 😮‍💨, we are still thinking about last month’s BIPOC Market… Thank you to everyone for coming to the BIPOC Market this year, held in collaboration between AUS, CUS, KUS and SUS’ respective equity teams. We hope you had an incredible time going through our different vendors (and hope you walked away with some new goodies 🤫). We just wanted to highlight some of our vendors, and show everyone that the market goes beyond selling goods, and bridges BIPOC communities as well as amplifying BIPOC voices. We hope you enjoy this reel, and look forward to next year, maybe… 👀👀

We’re inviting members of our SUS EDI community to share their reflections on this year’s events, initiatives, and spaces.
What felt meaningful? What could we improve? What would you like to see next year?
Our work only grows when it’s shaped by the people it’s meant to support!
