Today I got to see my friend Christine at St. John’s School to weave hearts with a couple of classes! Oh what fun they had! Each wove their heart and learned to twine with my naturally dyed yarn. In particular, they learned that my yellow comes from a Dyer’s polypore mushroom which glows under UV light! I made a black box and keep a mushroom sample and a small sample of the dyed wool! Shrieks of ooohs and aaaahs were heard! Needless to say they were amazed! Hay čxʷ q̓ə For a great day! @ritakompst #musqueamartist #coastsalish #cedarweaving #fibreartist

What a FUN class! Hay čxʷ q̓ə To the UBC Equity & Inclusion Department for having me in to share cedar 🩷 weaving! We wove hearts with cedar adding my naturally dyed yarn (thanks @urbanyarns ) to twine the close after placing personal messages inside. They will be reminded of their message each time they look at it. The 💜 is not a traditional weaving but it gives us the opportunity to learn the basic over/under weave as well as the basic twining method while weaving something memorable incorporating two fibres that come from the land. This is a great opportunity to connect! @ritakompst #musqueamartist #coastsalish #cedarweaving

It was a fabulous day spent with the EartHand Gleaners Society which will now have the Vancouver Fibre-shed under its umbrella. The VF has been inactive for the past two years and is being brought back through EHG. There are so many wonderful people working behind the scenes to make this happen. I joined EHG in January as the Indigenous Advisor. Thanks to all for the warm welcome. If you are interested in fibre arts and stewardship consider joining our membership. One of the days’ highlights was meeting Susan from Barnston Island who shared wonderful stories of each sheep during the auction. It was my pleasure to meet her❤️. See the @earthandgleaners link for info. Thanks to all for a fabulous day! @ritakompst #musqueamartist #vancouverfibreshed #fibreartist

Thank you to all who joined me for the EartHand Gleaners Society for our lichen dye workshop on Sunday! Shout out to Carla for all her assistance. We first dyed Usnea / Old mans beard using the boiling water method. As you can see I did not get any photos of the workshop. Participants each fermented lichen in a jar to take home and shake daily! We scraped Xanthoria for our next dye gathering where will also dye with Lungwart using the boiling water method. Such a beautiful yellow achieved dyeing with Letharia vulpina / wolf lichen. Thanks to everyone for a fun afternoon of laughs and natural dyeing. A shout out to our new members who joined us🤗 @ritakompst #musqueamartist #naturaldyersofinstagram #fiberart #lichendye #vancouver

I will be leading a Lichen fermenting / natural dye multi class with my friend Carla with EartHand Gleaners Society this Sunday. Check the link for member registration and sign up! Our lichen has been harvested ethically and sustainably from fallen branches. It is not scraped off of standing trees or rocks! Later in the year we will weave with our lichen dyed wool! #musqueamartist #naturaldyersofinstagram #weavetoheal #fiberartist
