Around the world BIPOC women have been at the forefront of feminist movements. They’ve demonstrated strength, resistance, bravery, and creativity in the face of oppressive systems. This post introduces three groundbreaking feminist authors and academics whose works are precious and invaluable. Let’s keep reading and learning through the radical works of women of colour! 💜
In honour of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Let’s Talk Women of Colour, the UBC Black Student Union, and the AUS Centre partnered to host a panel discussion on the intersectionality of injustice and how we can confront violence against women of colour.
Together, we reflected on the importance of learning from lived experiences and centering the voices of affected communities to create meaningful, community-rooted solutions. Our panel explored how stereotypes in film and social media continue to normalize and justify violence against marginalized women, and the urgent work still required to ensure Indigenous women, in particular, receive the respect and support they deserve.
Most importantly, we emphasized the need to care for one another and take a community-centred approach to addressing racialized gender-based violence—recognizing that it can happen to anyone, and everyone deserves equal care and dignity.
Spaces like these are essential for destigmatizing racialized violence and building communities grounded in compassion, empathy, and solidarity.
A huge thank you to our panelists—Kory Wilson, Jenna Breuer, and Lindsey Nkem—for sharing your powerful insights. And thank you to the BSU and AUS for your support with logistics and promotion! #internationaldayfortheeliminationofracialdiscrimination #mmiw #antiracism #ubc #intersectionalfeminist
The Strategy team has completed their annual review of the AUS E&I Strategy and have officially released it on our website for public view. We put forth this bill to ensure that the AUS operations are equitable and effectively implement diversity, and inclusion. It outlines the principles, structures, and practices that define a safe and just AUS community. It provides actionable guidelines to empower marginalized groups and ensure that equity and inclusion are embedded across all operations.
The AUS is committed to creating a safe environment for people of all identities and backgrounds, which entails fulfilling the needs of communities including but not limited to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, Indigenous communities, asylum seekers, racialized communities, and marginalized ethnic, religious, and national groups in club initiatives.
Thus, we ask for feedback from Arts students and the broader community on whether they feel this document accurately captures the principles and values of Arts students experiences. The feedback form and E&I Strategy are linked in our bio and available on our website at www.ubcaus.ca. We value and appreciate your feedback on how we can encapsulate the needs and experiences of marginalized communities better at AUS through its structure, organization, and policies.

The AUS extends its support to students and citizens affected by the heavy presence of ICE in the US and Canada. Our student community is incredibly diverse, including many US students that study at UBC, and every student belongs and contributes to the school community. The AUS recognizes that many Canadian provinces are involved with maintaining ICE’s efforts and strongly condemns the operations that threaten the lives of protesters, immigrants, and civilians. The UBC community continues to learn from the courageous protesters whose lives were taken in an effort to silence them. We encourage everyone to stay informed of their rights. 💜
