Surf City CX had some proper cross conditions on Sunday. I wasn’t able to make it out on Saturday due to work, but man I’m stoked I was able to document yesterday because it was definitely a fun, wet & wild one!

Bad news. The weather is holding out and we're probably not gonna get any rain this weekend. Oh well, guess we're in for another beautiful fall weekend in the Santa Cruz Mountains. At least the dirt is wet.
Now this is the last reminder to get your butt down to Santa Cruz this weekend. Whatever…if you don't like fun, stay home. But seriously, Surf City Cyclocross is one of the only (the only?) weekend-long camping bike races in the Bay Area. Well, other than Sea Otter (gross). When you get old, you're not going to remember how many chores that you caught up on, or how many hours you spent doom-scrolling as your body slowly becomes one with your couch. Nobody cares if you abandon your responsibilities for a few days to go ride bikes around the forest and party with a bunch of other hooligans.
No! This is cyclocross season goddamnit! And it's coming to a peak this weekend. As someone following this page, that should mean something for you. It doesn't matter if you are out of shape. Race down a category. Maybe you'll surprise yourself and remember how much you miss pinning on a number and lining up. Don't worry, we've got plenty of porta-potties so you can have the pre-race jitters without waiting in line. If you really don't have what it takes, borrow your neighbor's dog and sign up for doggie cross, the ultimate everybody-is-a-winner lifestyle parade.
Oh yeah, don't be selfish, bring a friend. They'll be so impressed with you when they find themselves throwing their fists into the air watching the spectacle of Kell Mckenzie and Dan English duking it out in the Pixie Bike World Championships on Saturday night, the scent of woodsmoke from the bonfire eliciting primordial memories from before we became mindless digital A.I. worshipping drones disconnected from our very humanity, not realizing that life had been nothing but a vacuous, meaningless purgatory until this very moment. You owe it to them. And to yourself.
Finally, we predict that you're going to regret not having something to wear for the Sunday costume race. That's ok. Plenty of other people have been working on their shit for the past 11 months and you can just enjoy that from the sidelines.
Team Rock Lobster met up at Crest Ranch today to spiff up our world infamous cyclocross flow trail. I must say that the dirt is looking pretty primo. With a nice bit of early rain, the trails are nice and tacky and this year’s course is looking 👌 Will we see you up there!??
Surf City is more than a bike race it’s a community 🥹.
After the last lap is done, the real magic happens: bonfires, pixie bike world championships, laughter, late-night stories and maybe even a bottle being passed around the campfire.
