Queen Classic Surf Festival
@queenclassicsurfestival is a unique celebration: of surfing, feminist and ecological collectives, Basque culture, artists, musicians, and dancing — started by three friends
@amaya_gomis @margause @aimee_arramon
Last September, we sent our friend, photographer David Billet
@icy_squid to Biarritz to document the festival for Hard Sun

David’s Notes:
First time leaving the country. Left New York with a tote bag of camera gear, jeans, and a T-shirt.
The French man I sat next to on the plane who did not speak a word of English but shared a cheese plate and 3 little bottles of wine with me.
The dog that peeked his head out of the window every time I walked past on my way to the beach. Never barked. Felt like the guard of the beach. Everyone leaves their windows open in Biarritz.
The surfers from all over the world who traveled from festival to festival. Like Adan, the hula hoop surfer. They were curious who I was in my T-shirt and jeans with a little camera in my hand.
The ocean, my biggest fear. At the edge of a cliff, the most ancient staircase leading down to the water.
Feeling like the quiet outsider. Around all these people who are obsessed with the water, who spend their lives following the waves.
