Wendell Harrison @iamwendellharrison of the SUN RA Arkestra (1961-1962). After returning to his hometown of Detroit, Wendell took a lesson from SUN RA starting his own record label, Tribe renowned to this day and coveted by diggers everywhere for spiritual jazz masterpieces like Message from the Tribe and An Evening with the Devil.

May 7th through the 21st, we’re hosting an art auction on @artsy in support of the project, working to raise funds needed for the film’s post-production. The auction features works by @allisonjanaehamilton , @heyitsbunmi , @reginaldsylvester2 , @sanfordbiggers , @saulwilliams , @shantell_martin , @tadebimpe , and @adger1641 .
These eight artists take inspiration from SUN RA’s retrofuture aesthetic and compelling conception of a universal Black Consciousness. Sun Ra’s story opens onto a vast, intricate universe that defies categorization and extends beyond music into visual culture and philosophy that decades later continues to resonate across a range of artistic disciplines. These works become part of an ongoing process of preservation, storytelling, and cultural continuity.

From the collection of married couple and Arkestra veterans, Ruth & Alzo Wright a homemade record set with a copy of Heliocentric Worlds and Sub Underground Series Volume 1. With his own title, “Message for Black Ears” Alzo adorned the cover with a collage of various mouths and ears of everyone from James Baldwin to Stevie Wonder on the cover 💫also note the swatches of shower curtain to laminate the label designs 🌍
Heartened to see Tom Wilson getting his due in book form. I was actually enlisted to edit a feature doc on the man a few years ago that had been stalled for sometime and then shelved after the tragic death of director, Sasha Jenkins. Wilson started his own jazz label while still at Harvard recording debuts by Cecil Taylor, Donald Byrd and SUN RA. With later stints at Columbia and MGM, Wilson was a key figure in producing the most innovative artists of the 60s: Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention, The Velvet Underground and basically inventing Folk Rock when he put drums and bass on Simon & Garfunkel’s Sounds of Silence. (Without their knowledge!) 🪐
