Philadelphia is special: it’s a city rooted in history and its people deeply connected to it. E+T’s story began at the University of Pennsylvania, and their wedding day opened at the Union League, one of the city’s historical pillars. Among the historic volumes in a library they absolutely adored, this was more than a beautiful, rich setting - they’re avid readers, and even took a moment after their first look to play a quick game of chess. Once at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, we moved from gallery to gallery, E’s couture Galia Lahav gown radiating with its crystal detailing as a work of art itself within the Museum. With a shared love of art and E’s background in antiquities, choosing the Philadelphia Museum of Art was the perfect fit. Storied exhibitions, grand chandeliers and historic furniture, architectural excellence, winding staircases, art and excellence at every turn… everything felt so them. In event design, we often think about transformation: how do we take a blank slate and make it spectacular? Or, just as often, how can we cover up the portions we don’t want to be seen? But when your venue is a museum, built in 1928, you let history do the talking. Dinner for E+T’s Philadelphia Museum of Art wedding was set beneath towering ceilings and columns, with Diana, the 13-foot bronze by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, holding court in the background. When you’re surrounded by artwork that’s been around for centuries, restraint becomes the smartest design move. The palette stayed golden, but pops of blue, red, and green, along with botanical embroidered details, made their way into the mix completely, complementing the space. The architecture carried the weight, but the design knew exactly when to step in. There truly is no more iconic institution in Philadelphia than the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Stunning, historic, and a cultural institution. For E+T, there was no other choice for their wedding. PMA is a photographer’s playground (if you play by the rules): we took portraits among priceless, world-famous works of art: literal Monets, Picassos, Cezannes, Van Goughs…  Working in the museum does come with its technical hurdles: no flash, gallery light meant for paintings, not for people, and - as it’s a public institution - working on compressed timelines. The art is delicate and the curators are vigilant - they do INDEED carry UV + light meters. I used a constant light bounced into a 6-foot umbrella on a wheeled stand to give us that gorgeous, clean, directional light we want while protecting the PMA and respecting our hosts. What a privilege it is to work within a space so storied, with a couple who lives and breathes its art. Celebrating Nikki and Bill today on their third Anniversary! Of all of the weddings I’ve shot in my career this is definitely one of the ones that strangers, future clients, friends, other vendors reference! No joke…I’ve heard things like “I don’t even know these people and I’d hang that on my wall!” I’ve thought about why that is…what was the “secret”? The truth is that it comes down to the PEOPLE and PRESENCE. Nikki and Bill (and their families and friends) truly “lived the day”. There wasn’t an ounce of performance. Just great humans enjoying living life together…Nikki and Bill just happened to be getting married this day! I’ve been fortunate enough to get to know them a bit and celebrate with their wonderful families and friends over the years. And I can say without question they are as authentic and kind as they come! THAT is the key to a great wedding and life! Speaking of…these two are killing it and have the sweetest baby boy!
