ten lives
location: zurich switzerland, 2025
context: exhibition design for einfach zürich and friedhof forum zürich
collaboration with studio noi, with participation of ivana luggen
idea: from the founding of the kronenhalle to platzspitz, dada, and death metal: zurich’s history has seen many ups and downs. its last 200 years are told through the lives of ten people. lived in the same city, buried in the same soil – they all found their final resting place in the sihlfeld cemetery. their life stories are woven into an audio installation that can be experienced on-site. a grand, unified gesture fills the space. the carpeted seating and lounging area is a large collage composed of glimpses into the cemetery’s natural landscape. subjective stories intertwine to form something collective, a portrait of zurich that invites immersion.

What a journey! For “Ten Lives—The History of a City” by Friedhof Forum and Einfach Zürich, and together with Grégory Taniguchi Ambos, we created one of our largest artworks yet: a rug to lie on while listening to the stories of ten remarkable lives that shaped Zurich. All of them share one thing—they found their final resting place at Sihlfeld Cemetery. Apart from the rug, we designed a publication, posters, signage, and all graphic elements of the exhibition.
Huge thanks to @gregory.taniguchi.ambos for the inspiring collaboration, @einfach_zuerich and @friedhof_forum for their trust, @ortreport_gmbh for the productive dialogue @marjetamorinc for perfect precision and @abcdinamo for final tweaking ✨
The exhibition is open until 16 July 2026

The first issue of the newly designed Kunstbulletin is out! Our aim was to bring in more contrast, more colour and more air so that readers can navigate through it in different ways.
A redesign is always teamwork. Firstly, we would like to thank Deborah Keller (@deborah__keller ), Meret Arnold (@arnoldmeret ) and the whole Kunstbulletin team for their trust and professional way in which they managed the project in such a tight time frame. Many thanks to Lia Grünig, who assisted us during the design process – including a quick start into coding. We would like to thank Leonardo Azzolini and Simon Mager from Omnitype for customising Marmo, and to Aurèle Sack for customising beautiful Ivory. Nicole Widmer Meyer for layouting and typesetting (and your patience!). Christoph Meyer and Gerold Ritter for taking care of synchronisation and scripting. And Rebekka Steiger for providing a perfect picture for the first issue. A big thank you to all of you!

Rahel Hartmann Schweizer 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐬: 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞
Lisbeth Sachs (1914–2002) caused a sensation at the very beginning of her professional career: freshly graduated, she won the 1939 competition for the Kurtheater Baden. With the building, opened in 1952, she expressed her lucid architectural position and experienced what it meant to be one of the first independent Swiss female architects in a male-dominated profession. For Sachs, construction was a procedural act that extended from craftsmanship to the suitability of materials and finally to people’s appropriation of spaces. She sought to achieve architecture that floated, emerging organically from the topography and following environmentally and socially compatible principles. Her interdisciplinary understanding of architecture as applied ecology makes her work and thinking more relevant now than ever.
Rahel Hartmann Schweizer’s book about this unconventional architect, researcher and critical writer is part of Switzerland’s contribution to the 2025 Architecture Biennale in Venice involving the revival by Annexe of Lisbeth Sachs’ temporary Saffa 1958 art gallery.

Last days! This winter we had the wonderful opportunity to design the exhibition “Virginia Woolf & Mrs Dalloway” at Museum Strauhof, curated by Elisabeth Bronfen. Next Thursday, May 15, from 6–8 pm, we will give a short guided tour – you are welcome to join! The exhibition will close on May 18.
Many thanks to everyone involved: Philip Sippel and Rémi Jaccard from @strauhof for the productive conversations; Elisabeth Bronfen for her passion and enthusiasm. Jana Bersorger and Lisa Steurer for finding those last images we needed. @liagruenig , who stood by our side during the entire design process and without whom we would not have been able to meet all the deadlines. @danielaspack for typesetting the reader in the shortest possible time. And last but not least, artist and interior designer Vanessa Bell – Virginia Woolf’s sister – for her beautiful book cover designs for Hogarth Press, which we used as source material for the wallpapers. So ahead of her time! 💜💜💜

It was a pleasure!
