@studio.labour Tower of Silence currently on view at @juliastoschekfoundation in Berlin This is a capture of @hatam.farahnaz and @colinhacklander inside their newest large-scale commission piece, Tower of Silence (2024). It is part of the AFTER IMAGES exhibition, which will take place from 11.09.2024 to 27.04.2025. This multisensory installation evokes the 3,000-year-old Zoroastrian death ritual of excarnation toward a vision of the soul’s transfiguration after death. Every half hour, participants encounter an activation of sound and light through which LABOUR explores three types of silence: forced silence, stoic silence, and profound silence. Come for an artist talk on November 28th with the curator, Lisa Long ✨ #towerofsilence #studiolabour #farahnazhatam #colinhacklander #juliastochekfoundarion #afterimages #exhibition #photodocumentation #evelynbencicova

Guestlecturer/ Artist Talk 12.3., 7 pm @hsmbasel_music_and_scene LABOUR @studio.labour is the Berlin-based artist duo of Farahnaz Hatam and Colin Hacklander who create works based on sound. Collaborating as a duo since 2013, they founded LABOUR in 2018 with their work, next time, die consciously. They have presented their work all over the world, including at Donaueschinger Musiktage, Martin Gropius Bau, Kraftwerk Berlin, Sharjah Biennial, Art Basel, Julia Stoschek Foundation Berlin, Grand National Theatre Dakar, EMΣT National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens, MUDAM Luxembourg and Berghain Klubnacht. They have released music on labels such as Honest Jon’s, Kuboraum Editions, and their own imprint, studio LABOUR. Their installation work tower of silence was recently acquired by the Julia Stoschek Collection. They regularly collaborate on works for theater, performance, video and fashion; are fellows of Villa Aurora Los Angeles; have a monthly radio show on NTS; and are long-term residents of Callie’s shared sound studio in Berlin. They previously ran the experimental music venue in Berlin called N.K. Projekt. For the occasion of this artist talk, Farahnaz Hatam and Colin Hacklander (LABOUR) will speak about their practice, including their format of ‘sonic activations’. This will cover their research, working process, sound synthesis and operating across different mediums and categories, including performance, installation, concert and theater. sonic activations, is the evolving site-specific format developed by LABOUR since 2018 that explores and presents architectural space with sound, drawing on a building’s structural framework through its different rooms and interstitial spaces to encourage active listening. Works in this format often engage performers, unamplified sounds and loudspeakers to create a sequence of spatial listening situations, with the audience led by sound from one sonic event to the next. The duo will focus on specific recent works including, dispersion of subjectivity (2025), more heat than light (2025), tower of silence (2024), and sungazing (2022-ongoing). In Cooperation @kasernebasel and @magicmarcel_ showing 19.3.

Denn senegalesischer Sabar, indischer Dub bis hin zu Folk sind eng verwurzelt mit dem Land, der Arbeit, und gemeinsam verbrachter Zeit. From the Senegalese music style sabar to Indian dub and folk music, sound grows out of land, labor, and shared time. Music isn’t staged or spotlighted here; it’s rhythm held in families, passed through practice, carried by breath and everyday life.  𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐁𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝟏𝐏𝐁 move through villages and neighborhoods, listening to how music holds place and how place holds people. ANNOUNCEMENT FOR PREMIERE 17.01.2026 8pm as part of Norient Sound Festival Transcriptions is dedicated to Doudou Ndiaye Coumba Rose (1930-2015). Shot before and during the COVID pandemic on site in Dakar, Transcriptions explores sabar drumming not just as music, but as a form of cultural knowledge, ancestral communication, and resistance. It is a film about sound as memory, about how rhythm becomes an archive of social structure, gender dynamics and belief systems in Senegalese griot traditions. The drumming, once used to send messages across kingdoms, now echoes in a contemporary world where its function has been continuously reinvigorated and maintains significant societal relevance to this day. Rather than focusing on performance or representation alone, this film investigates what it means to carry a sonic legacy forward. Through the voices and practices of Doudou N’Diaye Rose’s family - each navigating their own path within and beyond tradition - Transcriptions presents music as an archive of time shaped by history, fractured by modernity, and vibrating with possibility. This list highlights emergent subjectivities via semantics, a tension between narration and simulation, addressing themes of subjectivity as mediated through contemporary technological, environmental and spiritual dimensions, with a proportion incorporating themes from eschatology and death studies, thus spanning subjectivity in life and subjectivity after life. Transcriptions looks at Senegal’s sabar drumming tradition, tracing its lineage through family, heritage, and evolving gender roles. dispersion of subjectivity (II), 2025 autostereogram, digital print 136 x 149 cm second in the series and complementing the first, these iterations of figures are based on a photograph taken by Farah, and again transformed by digital aberrations resulting from the creation of an autostereogram, wherein an addition layer of depth emerges when viewed in a particular way. DRIFT In a parallel sensorial analogy, these two visual works reinforce the experience of auditory hallucination within the musical composition, a hidden embeddedness. dispersion of subjectivity (I), 2025 autostereogram, digital print 88 x 233 cm the original water color by Farah is transformed by digital aberrations resulting from the creation of an autostereogram, wherein a hidden layer of depth emerges through a specific manner of viewing the image. DRIFT these 34 iterations of figures formed the basis for the generation of musical material for the performance, for example the work’s main rhythmic figures in 17/8, groups of 7-3-5-2, 2-5-3-7, etc, and macro summations… this one dedicated to the brilliant Gerhard Schütze (d. 2017). miss you, G!
