It was through our mutual friend Emanuel Rossetti that I first time met Stefan Tcherepnin. Stefan accompanied Rossetti‘s exhibition at Kunsthaus Glarus with an almost psychogeographically informed experimental opera for the SERGE synthesizer and a mixed choir. Although he comes from a musical dynasty (his uncle for instance is the creator of the legendary SERGE synth), he is better known to a broader audience as a visual artist with participations in numerous international exhibitions. That’s why I’m more than happy that he’s coming to @kasernebasel for a concert (joined by Paul Sigerhall). The second artist of the evening is Christian Naujoks, who, just like Stefan, celebrates the art of the in-between. After Julius Eastman’s exegesis, chamber music, and curiosity about popular music styles, he has, in recent years and under the personal influence of a hearing impairment, focused on exploring the breaking points of listening - that is, the point at which perception becomes fragile, overloaded, or dissolves. On Slide 3, you’ll find the beloved album „WAVE“ (Dial Records) with the beautiful cover artwork by Heike-Karin Foell. 💐 Wednesday 22.04. // Doors 20:30 Credits: Slide 1 - @dianapfammatter Slide 2 - @viktorfordell Slide 3 - @heikek3000

Guestlecturer/ Artist Talk 12.3., 7 pm @hsmbasel_music_and_scene LABOUR @studio.labour is the Berlin-based artist duo of Farahnaz Hatam and Colin Hacklander who create works based on sound. Collaborating as a duo since 2013, they founded LABOUR in 2018 with their work, next time, die consciously. They have presented their work all over the world, including at Donaueschinger Musiktage, Martin Gropius Bau, Kraftwerk Berlin, Sharjah Biennial, Art Basel, Julia Stoschek Foundation Berlin, Grand National Theatre Dakar, EMΣT National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens, MUDAM Luxembourg and Berghain Klubnacht. They have released music on labels such as Honest Jon’s, Kuboraum Editions, and their own imprint, studio LABOUR. Their installation work tower of silence was recently acquired by the Julia Stoschek Collection. They regularly collaborate on works for theater, performance, video and fashion; are fellows of Villa Aurora Los Angeles; have a monthly radio show on NTS; and are long-term residents of Callie’s shared sound studio in Berlin. They previously ran the experimental music venue in Berlin called N.K. Projekt. For the occasion of this artist talk, Farahnaz Hatam and Colin Hacklander (LABOUR) will speak about their practice, including their format of ‘sonic activations’. This will cover their research, working process, sound synthesis and operating across different mediums and categories, including performance, installation, concert and theater. sonic activations, is the evolving site-specific format developed by LABOUR since 2018 that explores and presents architectural space with sound, drawing on a building’s structural framework through its different rooms and interstitial spaces to encourage active listening. Works in this format often engage performers, unamplified sounds and loudspeakers to create a sequence of spatial listening situations, with the audience led by sound from one sonic event to the next. The duo will focus on specific recent works including, dispersion of subjectivity (2025), more heat than light (2025), tower of silence (2024), and sungazing (2022-ongoing). In Cooperation @kasernebasel and @magicmarcel_ showing 19.3.

I love Joanne Robertson! Somehow lo-fi, somehow folky, but above all it’s her attitude, the vague (which is also evident in her paintings), that fits so well with our time. A few years ago she collaborated with Dean Blunt to create „Black Metal“, and I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to describe it as a kind of „The Beatles - White Album” for our generation. She has also released some incredibly great music as a solo artist, most recently the album Blurrr on the quality label @ad93rec . With little help from friend, artist, and mother of two cats @gina_folly , we managed to invite Joanne for a concert in the intimate setting of the small room at @kasernebasel . No support, no DJ, just Joanne and us! 🗡️Friday 06.02. // Doors: 20:00

With albums such as The Sacrificial Code and Does Spring Hide Its Joy (with @stephenomalley74 & @lucyrailton ), Kali Malone has both revitalized the genre of minimal music and brought sacred and early music into the context of contemporary music. For a special edition of the Listen! series, she performs an organ concert in the beautiful @kulturkirche.paulus . Right at the start of the new year, she invites the audience to a slow-motion listening ritual that, true to the name of the series, encourages attentive and focused listening. ALL LIFE LONG! <tickets running low>

For the last edition of Listen! before the summer break, we invited the duo @andreabelfi & @jules_reidy . I’ve been following them for a while now and I was very happy that they collaborated for an EP. “dessus oben alto up” (@marionettelabel ) is really one of my favorite records of the last year. Deconstructed guitar playing, restrained drums, electronics. Sometimes that’s all it takes. To quote my friend @uomodicarne here: An EP that uses reduced means to achieve ever new results, even if the direction remains the same: Into infinity and beyond. The second concert of the evening is a solo by Amedeo Maria (@dressed.for.space )on the Shō, a Japanese mouth organ. Amedeo has worked with the late Catherine Christer Hennix in the past. In the fall, he will be part of a concert at the Biennale Musica in Venice, where pieces by Hennix will be performed. 🥁: 07.05. 2025 // Doors 19:00 🏰: @kasernebasel

The Basel-based Swiss pianist and composer Marianne Schroeder is regarded as a specialist in New Music. She has collaborated with and premiered work by John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Anthony Braxton, Morton Feldman, Pauline Oliveros and Giacinto Scelsi, with whom she also studied. Her most recent recording was „Petra“ by Maryanne Amacher together with Stefan Tscherepnin, which was published by @blankforms_ in 2019. On the occasion of her 80th birthday, we are celebrating a Sunday concert with a special premiere (with a text by Elfriede Jelinek) and because birthdays should not be celebrated alone, we have invited @charlemagnepalestine as a special guest. Charlemagne is a contemporary of Tony Conrad, Terry Riley and La Monte Young and, like them, a pioneer of US minimalism. Not to be missed! 🎹 13.04.2025 // Doors: 15:00 🧸 @kasernebasel

For the next chapter of the Listen! series, we have invited the Berlin-based French computer musician and sound artist @jessicaekomane (@inagrm , @shelter_press ). In her quadraphonic performances, Jessica creates immersive soundscapes that produce an almost cathartic effect through the interplay of psychoacoustics, rhythmic structures and noises. Her work can be found in large art institutions as well as small clubs (and everything in between). This year, she is also a juror for the fantastic residency program of @la_becque . Similarly cathartic is the work of Swiss artist @agonis_amenthia of @amenthia_recordings . Best known for his intelligent deep techno pieces, he takes the time between his performances in the superclubs of this world to pursue his interest in experimental music with a piece he produces exclusively for Listen! 💿 27.03.2025 // Doors: 19:00 📌 @kasernebasel

Please Welcome @lukasdeclerckck to the next Edition of Listen! @kasernebasel . I saw him for the first time at the always fantastic @meakusma Festival. After three days, already a bit cooked from the many musical highlights, I think I stumbled with @nika__son into this hall immersed in red light, where Lukas cast a spell over the crowd like a snake charmer with the aulos, a thousand-year-old flute instrument from the ancient Mediterreanean region. Most recently he released a great record on @ideologicorgan which I can strongly recommend to check. To complete the wind-instrument madness, swiss artist Axel Kolb is the second artist of the evening explores the drone quality of the trombone. 🎺 19.02.2025 // Doors: 19:30
