Three architectural volumes create opportunities for dramatic roof forms, plentiful daylighting, and vaulted interiors at both levels, while organizational axes highlight framed views around and through this courtyard house. Blackened cedar siding and a light Accoya wood siding from @deltamillworks clad the exterior. The Accoya, color-matched to the concrete, helps to define the darkly-clad upper volumes. Concrete columns are angled to direct views out toward the landscape, rather than define spatial boundaries. Exposed scuppers and downspouts are carefully- detailed, minimalist moments. This low-tech yet effective water management system is one of several visual cues that harken to the agricultural context. The new swimming pool is set in a mown area of meadow with a simple pasture fence perimeter, a nod to the utilitarian expression of neighboring farms. Rolling pastures dotted with barns, forests, and wildflowers surround the Stanfordville House. Tucked just beyond the crest of a hill, the home offers its residents both privacy and panoramic views of its fifty acres of idyllic reclaimed farmland. On neighboring hills, distant barns and farming facilities offer vernacular references for a home that is both contextual and boldly independent. The clients’ goal was to create a welcoming space for guests and extended family. To support the hyperlocal ecosystem of pollinators, the site was revegetated with native grasses and wildflowers that also provide a softness that contrasts the home’s crisp silhouettes. The Stanfordville House debuts as a Featured Project on the @Architizer website today! Early in the design process, the clients introduced us to their feng shui master who provided siting parameters for the home. Following his guidance, the home maintains a strong north-south organization, and is oriented to align with particular structures on a distant hill. We re-interpreted the traditional courtyard typology with strong vistas through the midsection of the home & redefined the corners of the courtyard with axial views and movement through them. We are grateful to @structureworksconstruction , @murrayengineering , and @deltamillworks for their collaboration--- construction details, structural elegance, and the expressive beauty of wood merge together beautifully. From the outside alone, Nina Garbiras immediately understood that restoring her repeat clients’ 1860s Greek Revival farmhouse to its former glory would involve more than a little TLC. “Every single one of the original rooms was covered by ’80s additions that were like barnacles hanging off the original exterior,” recalls the principal designer and founder of New York–based design studio FIG. This home is both terraced and nestled into its sloped site to balance the proportions of the building against the hillside while also providing outdoor places to lounge, dine, and swim. It creates a modesty on one side as you approach a single story structure, but then the other side wraps into a dramatic two story facade that reveals the strength of the robust concrete retaining wall that makes way for the pool terrace. Sharing some views framed by nature, to the Chatham Residence. We love working with the existing topography and natural ecosystems inherent in a site. In this case, the existing forest merges with the home-- the leaf canopy creates arcs of shadow and light that inspired the roof forms; native birch trees and woodland ferns give the entry sequence a lush texture. Scuppers drain rainwater off the roof, expressing season rites of passage as a design moment to celebrate. Landscape and architecture riff off each other in playful ways. Nestled into a ridge criss-crossed by old stone walls and second-growth forest, this residence celebrates its materials: corrugated aluminum siding by @fabral_fgm and Accoya wood boards by @deltamillworks . These highly durable materials have been carefully detailed to elevate them beyond their typical use in regional vernacular & agricultural buildings. In this project, they express large curved overhangs that capture light and shadow with minimalist precision. Our design for a new pond pavilion is sited to capture sunlight as it moves across and through the surrounding forest from morning to late evening. We designed this pond pavilion to be a sculptural complement to the surrounding landscape: Light and shadows shift in dramatic ways over the course of a day and throughout the seasons. The structural details are expressed and celebrated. The exterior of each cylinder is finished in a luminous satin grey, reflecting the surrounding forest and sky, while the interior has a copper-colored finish that casts a warm glow within. Outdoor deck chairs will be arriving soon so the clients can lounge at the pavilion and soak in the beauty of the pond and forest. Thanks to @wagnerhodgson landscape architects for helping us restore the aquatic life in this spring-fed agricultural pond that was once used as a livestock watering hole.
