👀Eyes on the Street👀 Today we celebrate the birthday of Jane Jacobs, a visionary who reshaped how we think about cities, streets, and the people who bring them to life. At a time when top down, car centric planning dominated, Jacobs reminded us that cities are not machines. They are ecosystems of human interaction. Her advocacy for walkable neighborhoods, mixed use development, and #eyesonthestreet continues to influence human centred urban planning across the world. She showed us that vibrant cities emerge not from grand designs, but from the everyday rhythms of community life. #JaneJacobs legacy is a powerful reminder: when we design for people, cities thrive. And if you would like to express your love for human centred urban planning and design, the homies at @humankindcity got you covered with these beautiful Jane Jacobs caps stylishly presented by Ana, George & Maximilian!

From Street Experimentation to Urban Transformation: The Role of #TacticalUrbanism and #StreetExperiments in #UrbanMobility. Excited to share the newly published editorial by Enrica Papa, Luca Bertolini and myself in the #JournalOfUrbanMobility: /science/article/pii/S2667091726000245 This special issue explores street experiments, intentional, temporary changes to street use aimed at testing pathways toward more sustainable, people-centered cities. Across cities worldwide, such experiments are increasingly used to reallocate space, foster public life, and accelerate urban transitions. Across diverse contexts from Munich to Bologna to Hong Kong to Barcelona these contributions show that street experiments are not just temporary interventions, but powerful socio-political processes enabling learning, governance innovation, and long-term transformation. As cities face urgent challenges from climate neutrality to livability, experimentation is becoming central to planning practice for #urbantransitions.

Cities across the world, including in South Africa, have surrendered 80% of public space to privte cars, resulting in... ❌ Public transport users walking in dangerous conditions ❌ Less space for informal traders ❌ Pedestrians pushed to narrow sidewalks ❌ Cyclists risking their lives daily without any protected cycling lanes ❌ Kids who’ve never played on their own streets due to speeding cars ❌ Communities divided by highways But here’s the truth: streets don’t belong to cars. They never did. They belong to all of us. This is not only good for us as South Africa, or for the environment, but good for the economy too. 400+ cities worldwide are waking up to this. Bogotá. Paris. NYC. Cape Town... and now, Jozi Main Street Sundays: 12 April. RECLAIM THE STREETS. #ReclaimTheStreets #StreetsForPeople #MainStreetSundays

𝗔𝗻𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝘅𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵, 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 👩🏻‍🔬 Through Street Experiments for Transitions (SET) in Germany, Ana Rivas de Gante turns ideas into quick, low-cost street trials that get neighbours trying something new right outside their door.   In Munich, her work on the Steinhuber Miniblock opened streets to people and tested calmer, safer mobility. One small experiment sparked big neighbourhood conversations.   With roots in architecture and a love for hands-on change, she knows streets can change fast, and she just makes it happen.   Do you dare to change your street, too? 🤟 🚸 Find out more about @street_experiments 🎟️ Join us for Urban Future in Ljubljana. Excited that my talk “From Mobility Justice to Street Experiments: Game Changers in Public Space Transformations?” will open the course Accesibilidades, Ciudad y Movilidad tomorrow at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid! I’ll be sharing perspectives from our work at the @tu.muenchen on how principles of accessibility (#TUMAccessibilityPlanning), mobility justice (#TUMobilityJustice), and street experiments (@street_experiments ) can drive meaningful change towards human-centred planning in our neighborhoods and cities. If you are in Madrid, I would love to see familiar faces and new ones alike. Come join the conversation on how we can rethink our cities to be more inclusive, sustainable, and liveable. #UPM 🤝 #TUM
