Sonny in an eighties @ysl bathrobe I borrowed from a very polite young man (a Scoutmaster, it turned out) whom I met at the flea market the day before the shoot. I went back to his tiny chambre de bonne and had a rummage through his stuff. I also grabbed a pair of knights’ gauntlets - tbc. He liked the idea that his dressing gown would be paired with a shiny new pair of Saint Laurent shoes and worn by Sonny, whose poetry he loved. If I could style every one of my shoots this way, I would.

Sonny Hall, a poet and author of three books—The Blues Comes with Good News (2019), On the Soft Edge (2024), and Double Double, due out this year—has recently expanded his practice into visual art. Known for a body of work that navigates introspection and emotional clarity, Hall describes painting as a necessary shift: “I chose to paint because I had become too analytical.” Unlike Hall, whose experience with writing enabled him to unravel and organize the “madness” of his mind, artist Jan Melka finds words to be an unlikely medium of expression. A French-American artist based in Paris, approaches her practice through movement and lived experience. Working with a portable studio and without fixed attachments, she continues to develop a body of work shaped by travel and residencies. She recently presented a solo exhibition in São Paulo and has just returned from a residency in Bergamo. Her current series will culminate in a solo exhibition in Paris at the end of 2026. Delighted to announce that my portrait of Sonam - previously exhibited in The National Portrait Gallery, London - is now being hung at the @kunsthallemuc in Munich for the “Hair, Stories of Passion and Power” exhibition, running until 4th October 2026. Pretty thrilled to be positioned between Annette Frick and one of my absolute favourite artists Claude Cahun, as well as being adjacent to another hero of mine, Ana Mendieta. Others featured in the show include Marina Abramović, Sandro Botticelli, Hannah Wilke, Filippo Negroli (the “most famous armourer of all time”) and, of course, RuPaul. For all the mothers and mothers-to-be today, here’s a preview of June-Marie, aka Spin, for my ongoing long-term project Ideal Mother. With two days’ notice, I got on a flight to New York City to capture @the_officialspinqueen almost exactly on her due date. She’s one of the most incredible people I’ve ever met. One of the most rewarding elements of this series has been the people I’ve collaborated with so far. Mothers of every gender, race, culture and age are incomparably inspiring to me. Portraying as broad a spectrum of the term “mother” has driven this project for the last 4 years. Please get in touch if you feel you don’t conform to society’s “ideal” as a mothering person. The project is ongoing, and I hope to publish it as a hardback book and present it as an exhibition when it’s ready. It’s been a very long, very rich gestation so far. So far I’ve travelled all around the UK as well as Mexico, the USA, Japan, Spain, France, the Netherlands and Germany for this project.
